Book excerpt: Neurosurgery Updates: Critical Care for Neurosurgeons, Volume 3 is a constellation of chapters which gives a basic workflow for neurosurgeons to manage neurosurgery patients in the perioperative period. The book is suitable for practicing neurosurgeons as well as residents who are the backbone of any neurosurgical teaching program. The chapters have been contributed by experienced neuroscientists and critical care experts. Each chapter is based on the critical care aspects of a particular domain like trauma, pediatric neurosurgery, vascular neurosurgery, and the like. The experts have painstakingly curated the chapters and given a working suggestion of dos and don'ts. Focusing on practitioners, residents, and trainee neurosurgeons, the book offers guidance on selecting the most appropriate surgical management option for a variety of spinal conditions. All the 11 chapters of the book take the reader through a stepwise, logical presentation of not only the surgical approaches but also the neuroanatomy and biomechanics of the spine, pain mechanisms, and imaging techniques. Based on evidence-based practice and the vast experience of all authors, the book guides the reader through the diagnostic hierarchy and selection of the requisite approach for managing various disorders of the different regions of the spine. The book also identifies some of the most common potential complications of certain techniques and discusses strategies for avoiding them. The various surgical techniques have been described in the form of case presentations and illustrated with the help of images. The book will be of interest to not only neurosurgeons but also orthopaedic surgeons. Key Features: Guidance on selecting the most appropriate surgical management option for a variety of spinal conditions Logical presentation of surgical approaches and the neuroanatomy and biomechanics of the spine, pain mechanisms, and imaging techniques Identifies some of the most common potential complications of certain techniques and discusses strategies for avoiding them

Book excerpt: “Practical Handbook of Neurosurgery” invites readers to take part in a journey through the vast field of neurosurgery, in the company of internationally renowned experts. At a time when the discipline is experiencing a (detrimental) tendency to segment into various subfields and scatter in the process, it can be worthwhile to collect a number of practical lessons gleaned from experienced and leading neurosurgeons. The book also aims to present numerous important figures in the neurosurgical community, with a brief overview of the vitae and main contributions for each. We must confess that we were sad that some of the most active members were unable to participate, likely due to time constraints. We are however fortunate that the majority were able to take part. As such, though not exhaustive, the book does represent an anthology of contemporary neurosurgeons. From the preface: At the very beginning of the project, our intention was to make a “poetbook”. But month after month it became obvious that the work would be much more expansive; ultimately we produced three volumes. Nevertheless we hope that all the three volumes together will remain easily accessible and a daily companion. The pocket has to be more like a travel bag! We would like to thank all of the contributors; they have sacrficed their valuable time to deliver sound and critical views, and above all useful guidelines.

Book excerpt: As an addition to the European postgraduate training system for young neurosurgeons, we began to publish in 1974 this series of Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery which was later sponsored by the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. This series was first discussed in 1972 at a combined meeting of the Italian and German Neurosurgical Societies in Taormina, the founding fathers of the series being Jean Brihaye, Bernard Pertuiset, Fritz Loew and Hugo Krayenbuhl. Thus were established the principles of European co operation which have been born from the European spirit, flourished in the European Association, and have been associated throughout with this senes. The fact that the English language is now the international medium for communication at European scientificconferences is a great asset in terms of mutual understanding. Therefore we have decided to publish all contri butions in English, regardless of the native language of the authors. All contributions are submitted to the entire editorial board before publication of any volume for scrutiny and suggestions for revision. Our series is not intended to compete with the publications of original scientificpapers in other neurosurgical journals. Our intention is, rather, to present fields of neurosurgery and related areas in which important recent advances have been made. The contributions are written by specialists in the given fieldsand constitute the first part of each volume.

Book excerpt: This volume of Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery is devoted entirely to the spine. Like other volumes in the series, it presents important recent progress in the field and offers detailed descriptions of standard procedures to assist young neurosurgeons. Among the advances considered are approaches to spinal navigation, including intraoperative imaging based navigation, and concepts of spinal robotics. The value of sagittal balance as a parameter for the neurosurgeon is examined, and a novel surgical approach to longitudinal pathologies within the spinal canal is presented. Developments in surgery for kyphosis are also discussed, with a focus on pedicle subtraction osteotomy. The technical standards section critically reviews the latest evidence regarding cervical disc arthroplasty and pedicle-based non-fusion stabilization devices. The book concludes by discussing the treatment of craniovertebral junction instability as a result of juvenile chronic arthritis.
