Book excerpt: This "Guide" is a simple beginning, a stepping off point, the first cast, the kick-off, tee shot, puck-drop, tip-off, or whatever. It won't keep you from making mistakes along the way, no guide can do that. But perhaps the next time you're sitting in the garage or man cave or your favorite watering hole contemplating why your female partner is "pissed" at you, maybe this guide will give you a hint at where you went wrong. The guide certainly doesn't attempt to cover every possible nuance of behavior in the Female Universe (FU) and even if it did women would continue to change and surprise most men anyway. Change, so it would seem, is just part of the greater design in the FU. The FU is a truly complex concept. No matter what you might otherwise think, even if you're a dyed-in-the-wool male chauvinist, you need to relent and understand that women DO control the known universe. Look, in the beginning God created Man and then, for many reasons, God also created Woman (this means many reasons NOT related to having sex - most men have a single, simple focus which will be unraveled in the book). Assuming normal developmental rules for creating, or prototyping a new product - the first prototype of any new creation is usually simpler and cruder. The second prototype generally has fewer flaws and is less crude than its predecessor. Therefore, it is simple deductive reasoning to assume that the second person God created, the Female, may have been considered an "improved" model. This book acknowledges that most guys want to be successful in their environment and that the way to do that to some degree is to learn how to be creative and agile in that environment. It doesn't matter if the environment is work or sports or even the Female Universe - a few simple tools might give smart men a bit of an edge.

Book excerpt: From #1 New York Times bestselling author Dava Sobel, the "inspiring" (People), little-known true story of women's landmark contributions to astronomy A New York Times Book Review Notable Book Named one of the best books of the year by NPR, The Economist, Smithsonian, Nature, and NPR's Science Friday Nominated for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award "A joy to read.” —The Wall Street Journal In the mid-nineteenth century, the Harvard College Observatory began employing women as calculators, or “human computers,” to interpret the observations their male counterparts made via telescope each night. At the outset this group included the wives, sisters, and daughters of the resident astronomers, but soon the female corps included graduates of the new women's colleges—Vassar, Wellesley, and Smith. As photography transformed the practice of astronomy, the ladies turned from computation to studying the stars captured nightly on glass photographic plates. The “glass universe” of half a million plates that Harvard amassed over the ensuing decades—through the generous support of Mrs. Anna Palmer Draper, the widow of a pioneer in stellar photography—enabled the women to make extraordinary discoveries that attracted worldwide acclaim. They helped discern what stars were made of, divided the stars into meaningful categories for further research, and found a way to measure distances across space by starlight. Their ranks included Williamina Fleming, a Scottish woman originally hired as a maid who went on to identify ten novae and more than three hundred variable stars; Annie Jump Cannon, who designed a stellar classification system that was adopted by astronomers the world over and is still in use; and Dr. Cecilia Helena Payne, who in 1956 became the first ever woman professor of astronomy at Harvard—and Harvard’s first female department chair. Elegantly written and enriched by excerpts from letters, diaries, and memoirs, The Glass Universe is the hidden history of the women whose contributions to the burgeoning field of astronomy forever changed our understanding of the stars and our place in the universe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Many days I believe menopause is the new (if long overdue) frontier for the most compelling and necessary philosophy; Darcey Steinke is already there, blazing the way. This elegant, wise, fascinating, deeply moving book is an instant classic. I’m about to buy it for everyone I know.” —Maggie Nelson, author of The Argonauts A brave, brilliant, and unprecedented examination of menopause Menopause hit Darcey Steinke hard. First came hot flashes. Then insomnia. Then depression. As she struggled to express what was happening to her, she came up against a culture of silence. Throughout history, the natural physical transition of menopause has been viewed as something to deny, fear, and eradicate. Menstruation signals fertility and life, and childbirth is revered as the ultimate expression of womanhood. Menopause is seen as a harbinger of death. Some books Steinke found promoted hormone replacement therapy. Others encouraged acceptance. But Steinke longed to understand menopause in a more complex, spiritual, and intellectually engaged way. In Flash Count Diary, Steinke writes frankly about aspects of Menopause that have rarely been written about before. She explores the changing gender landscape that comes with reduced hormone levels, and lays bare the transformation of female desire and the realities of prejudice against older women. Weaving together her personal story with philosophy, science, art, and literature, Steinke reveals that in the seventeenth century, women who had hot flashes in front of others could be accused of being witches; that the model for Duchamp's famous Étant donnés was a post-reproductive woman; and that killer whales—one of the only other species on earth to undergo menopause—live long post-reproductive lives. Flash Count Diary, with its deep research, open play of ideas, and reverence for the female body, will change the way you think about menopause. It's a deeply feminist book—honest about the intimations of mortality that menopause brings while also arguing for the ascendancy, beauty, and power of the post-reproductive years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Feminine Universe is the first complete and concise exposition of the Traditionalist or Perennialist philosophy. It is also the first book to present that philosophy in the light of the world's primordial feminine traditions, which predate patriarchy by milennia. It is also the first book to subject the post-modernist developments of late 20th century thought to a thorough Perennialist critique. The breadth of this book's scope is astounding. From ancient patriarchy to the way we see the universe today; from a critique of the 17th-century enlightenment (which governs all modern thought) to the philosophy of Art Deco; from an explanation of how popular Darwinism plays the same role in modern society that creation myths played in older societies to an examination of how Islam and China are likely to develop as the Western Empire declines. This is a book full of surprises and yet each surprise follows logically and inexorably from the same perspective: the perspective that existed before patriarchy was ever thought of, and will exist when it is long forgotten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have been present on the Israeli screen since its inception, but have never held a central role in the narrative. The first canonical Israeli woman filmmaker, Michal Bat Adam, released her first feature film Moments in 1979, that focused on a friendship between women, a theme unexplored until then in Israeli cinema, and it is today considered as the film that opened a way for female Israeli filmmakers to realize their experiences were worth telling. Since then there has been an increasing number of female Israeli filmmakers, primarily since the turn of the Millenium. A World Apart: Contemporary Israeli Women’s Cinema is a book that explores the contributions of female Israeli filmmakers to contemporary Israeli cinema, providing an introductory background both historically and theoretically and an in-depth analysis of films produced in the 21st century. The book is divided into two parts: "Recurrent Themes and Expressions of Vulnerability in Israeli Women's Cinema" which discusses various issues in Israeli women's cinema, and "Leading Female Auteurs in Contemporary Israeli Cinema", which focuses on leading female filmmakers. The book aims to provide a comprehensive presentation and historical contextualization of contemporary Israeli women's cinema. The book is written for students and researchers in film, media, gender issues and related areas, yet employs a straightforward language that can be understood by a broader readership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of Reviving Ophelia, a guide to wisdom, authenticity, and bliss for women as they age. Women growing older contend with ageism, misogyny, and loss. Yet as Mary Pipher shows, most older women are deeply happy and filled with gratitude for the gifts of life. Their struggles help them grow into the authentic, empathetic, and wise people they have always wanted to be. In Women Rowing North, Pipher offers a timely examination of the cultural and developmental issues women face as they age. Drawing on her own experience as daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, caregiver, clinical psychologist, and cultural anthropologist, she explores ways women can cultivate resilient responses to the challenges they face. "If we can keep our wits about us, think clearly, and manage our emotions skillfully," Pipher writes, "we will experience a joyous time of our lives. If we have planned carefully and packed properly, if we have good maps and guides, the journey can be transcendent."
