Book excerpt: As customers and service providers begin to consolidate more and more applications and workloads onto shared storage infrastructures, it becomes increasingly difficult to coordinate outages for planned downtime for things, such as hardware refreshes. This difficulty is because many users, groups, or customers might be using the shared storage infrastructure at the same time. Users expect these infrastructures to be available 24/7, so it is imperative that service outages that are required for storage life-cycle management, cost/service-level optimization, and any other planned downtime do not disturb the availability of the always-on infrastructure. In this IBM® Redbooks® publication, we introduce you to the business value of Data Motion and its features. Storage and system administrators, data center managers, and IT as a service (ITaaS) providers will benefit from reading this book. In this publication, we assume that you have a basic knowledge of N series storage systems and Data ONTAP®, SnapMirror®, MultiStore®, and Provisioning Manager. A complete understanding of all Provisioning Manager features is not necessary. Also, basic knowledge of host and vFiler management from Provisioning Manager is sufficient. Data Motion significantly improves the availability of shared storage infrastructure by avoiding the service outages that are associated with planned activities, such as storage life-cycle management and cost/service-level optimization, thus helping you to enable an always-on IT environment. The business values of Data Motion are: - No planned downtime for: - Storage capacity expansion - Scheduled maintenance outages - Technology refresh - Improved SLA flexibility: - On-demand load balancing - Adjustable storage tiers - Application transparency: - No performance impact - Transaction integrity

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate workgroups, distributed enterprises, and small to medium-sized companies are increasingly seeking to network and consolidate storage to improve availability, share information, reduce costs, and protect and secure information. These organizations require enterprise-class solutions capable of addressing immediate storage needs cost-effectively, while providing an upgrade path for future requirements. IBM® System Storage® N series storage systems and their software capabilities are designed to meet these requirements. IBM System Storage N series storage systems offer an excellent solution for a broad range of deployment scenarios. IBM System Storage N series storage systems function as a multiprotocol storage device that is designed to allow you to simultaneously serve both file and block-level data across a single network. These activities are demanding procedures that, for some solutions, require multiple, separately managed systems. The flexibility of IBM System Storage N series storage systems, however, allows them to address the storage needs of a wide range of organizations, including distributed enterprises and data centers for midrange enterprises. IBM System Storage N series storage systems also support sites with computer and data-intensive enterprise applications, such as database, data warehousing, workgroup collaboration, and messaging. This IBM Redbooks® publication explains the software features of the IBM System Storage N series storage systems. This book also covers topics such as installation, setup, and administration of those software features from the IBM System Storage N series storage systems and clients and provides example scenarios.

Book excerpt: One of the biggest challenges for companies today continues to be the cost of data storage, which is a large and rapidly growing IT expense. IBM® System Storage® N series incorporates a variety of storage efficiency technologies to help organizations lower this cost. This IBM Redbooks® publication focuses on two key components: N series deduplication and data compression. In this book we describe in detail how to implement and use both technologies and provide information on preferred practices, operational considerations, and troubleshooting. N series data compression and deduplication technologies can work independently or together to achieve optimal savings. We explain how N series data compression and deduplication work with Data ONTAP 8.1 operating in 7-Mode. We help you decide when to use compression and deduplication based on applications and data types to balance space saving against potential overhead. Optimization and usage considerations are included to help you determine your space savings.

This book also covers topics such as installation, setup, and administration of those software features from the IBM System Storage N series storage systems and clients, and provides example scenarios.

Book excerpt: Welcome to the proceedings of the 10th Pacific Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM 2009) held in Bangkok, Thailand, December 15-18, 2009. Since its inception in 2000, PCM has rapidly grown into a major conference on multimedia in the Asia- Pacific Rim region and has built up its reputation around the world. Following the success of the preceding conferences, PCM 2008 in Taiwan, PCM 2007 in Hong Kong, PCM 2006 in China, PCM 2005 in Korea, PCM 2004 in Japan, PCM 2003 in Singapore, PCM 2002 in Taiwan, PCM 2001 in China, and PCM 2000 in Australia, the tenth PCM brought researchers, developers, practitioners, and educators together to disseminate their new discoveries in the field of multimedia. Theoretical bre- throughs and practical systems were presented at this conference, thanks to the s- port of Naresuan University, Mahanakorn University of Technology, and the IEEE Thailand Section. PCM 2009 featured a comprehensive program including keynote talks, regular - per presentations, posters, and special sessions. We received 171 papers from 16 countries including Australia, Sweden, German, Italy, Iran, France, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the UK, and the USA. After a rigorous review process, we accepted only 67 oral presentations and 45 poster pr- entations. Four special sessions were also organized by world-leading researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bring the latest statistical tools to bear on predicting future variables and outcomes A huge range of fields rely on forecasts of how certain variables and causal factors will affect future outcomes, from product sales to inflation rates to demographic changes. Time series analysis is the branch of applied statistics which generates forecasts, and its sophisticated use of time oriented data can vastly impact the quality of crucial predictions. The latest computing and statistical methodologies are constantly being sought to refine these predictions and increase the confidence with which important actors can rely on future outcomes. Time Series Analysis and Forecasting presents a comprehensive overview of the methodologies required to produce these forecasts with the aid of time-oriented data sets. The potential applications for these techniques are nearly limitless, and this foundational volume has now been updated to reflect the most advanced tools. The result, more than ever, is an essential introduction to a core area of statistical analysis. Readers of the third edition of Time Series Analysis and Forecasting will also find: Updates incorporating JMP, SAS, and R software, with new examples throughout Over 300 exercises and 50 programming algorithms that balance theory and practice Supplementary materials in the e-book including solutions to many problems, data sets, and brand-new explanatory videos covering the key concepts and examples from each chapter. Time Series Analysis and Forecasting is ideal for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in the areas of data science and analytics and forecasting and time series analysis. It is also an outstanding reference for practicing data scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physical processes which initiate and maintain motion have been a major concern of serious investigation throughout the evolution of scientific thought. As early as the fifth century B. C. questions regarding motion were presented as touchstones for the most fundamental concepts about existence. Such wide ranging philosophical issues are beyond the scope of this book, however, consider the paradox of the flying arrow attri buted to Zeno of Elea: An arrow is shot from point A to point B requiring a sequence of time instants to traverse the distance. Now, for any time instant, T, of the sequence the arrow is at a position, Pi' and at Ti+! the i arrow is at Pi+i> with Pi ::I-P+• Clearly, each Ti must be a singular time i 1 unit at which the arrow is at rest at Pi because if the arrow were moving during Ti there would be a further sequence, Til' of time instants required for the arrow to traverse the smaller distance. Now, regardless of the level to which this recursive argument is applied, one is left with the flight of the arrow comprising a sequence of positions at which the arrow is at rest. The original intent of presenting this paradox has been interpreted to be as an argument against the possibility of individuated objects moving in space.
