Book excerpt: The concept of moral injury emerged in the past decade as a way to understand how traumatic levels of moral emotions generate moral anguish experienced by some military service members. Interdisciplinary research on moral injury has included clinical psychologists (Litz et al., 2009; Drescher et al., 2011), theologians (Brock & Lettini, 2012; Graham, 2017), ethicists (Kinghorn, 2012), and philosophers (Sherman, 2015). This project articulates a new key concept—moral orienting systems— a dynamic matrix of meaningful values, beliefs, behaviors, and relationships learned and changed over time and through formative experiences and relationships such as family of origin, religious and other significant communities, mentors, and teachers. Military recruit training reengineers pre-existing moral orienting systems and indoctrinates a military moral orienting system designed to support functioning within the military context and the demands of the high-stress environment of combat, including immediate responses to perceived threat. This military moral orienting system includes new values and beliefs, new behaviors, and new meaningful relationships. Recognizing the profound impact of military recruit training, this project challenges dominant notions of post-deployment reentry and reintegration, and formulates a new paradigm for first, understanding the generative circumstances of ongoing moral stress that include moral emotions like guilt, shame, disgust, and contempt, and, second, for responding to such human suffering through compassionate care and comprehensive restorative support. This project calls for more effective participation of religious communities in the reentry and reintegration process and for a military-wide post-deployment reentry program comparable to the encompassing physio-psycho-spiritual-social transformative intensity experienced in recruit-training boot camp.

This book explores two questions simultaneously: What happens when we read biblical texts, especially biblical stories of war and violence, in light of emerging research on moral injury?, and What does the study of biblical texts and their interpretation contribute to the emerging work on moral injury among other fields and with veterans, chaplains, and other practitioners? The book begins by explaining the concept of moral injury as it has developed within psychology, military studies, chaplaincy, and moral philosophy, especially through work with veterans of the U.S. military’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. A major part of this work has been the attempt to identify means of healing, recovery, and repair for those morally injured by their experiences in combat or in similar situations. A key element for the book is that one feature of work on moral injury has been the appeal by psychologists and others to ancient texts and cultures for models of both the articulation of moral injury and possible means of prevention and healing. These appeals have, at times, referenced Old Testament texts that describe war-related rituals, practices, and experiences (e.g., Numbers 31). Additionally, work on moral injury within other fields has used ancient texts in another way—namely, as a means to offer creative re-readings of ancient literary characters as exemplars of warriors and experiences related to moral injury. For example, scholars have re-read the tales of Achilles and Odysseus in The Iliad and The Odyssey in dialogue with the experiences of American veterans of the Vietnam war and the moral struggles of combat and homecoming. Alongside these trends, consideration of moral injury has increasingly made its way into works on pastoral theology, Christian chaplaincy, and moral theology and ethics. These initial interpretive moves suggest a need for an extended and full-orbed examination of the interpretation of biblical texts in dialogue with the emerging formulation and practices of moral injury and recovery. This book will not simply be an effort to interpret various biblical texts through the lens of moral injury. It also seeks to explore and suggest what critical interpretation of the biblical texts can contribute to the work on moral injury going on not only among chaplains and pastoral theologians but also among psychologists, veterans’ psychiatrists, and moral philosophers. In the end, The Bible and Moral Injury suggests that current formulations of moral injury provide a helpful lens for re-reading the Bible’s texts related to war and violence but also that biblical texts and their interpretation offer resources for those working to understand and express the realities of moral injury and its possible means of healing and repair.

"Thou shalt not kill," is still the natural law code given by God ingrained upon all human hearts since the dawn of civilization. In combat it takes a supreme act of consciousness to distinguish between murder and killing in defense of a nation. The wounds that our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines can suffer from combat are not only physical but spiritual; wounds to the soul and conscience from perceived violations of moral norms based upon one's upbringing, societal standards and religion. Such moral injury can be devastating to the warrior's mental health. Things go wrong in war quickly and easily. War is a toxic. Combat comes with a terrific personal price tag. Healing and cleansing are necessary after combat. How do our warriors integrate the numbing images of violence and destruction that invades their souls without permission? How do our warriors reintegrate back into the civilian society that they have just defended with their lives and their blood? Will time and distance from the battlefield plus a splash of cognitive restructuring heal all wounds eventually? These questions I seek to answer through the lens of the cross of Christ. Moral injury is defined in the literature as a wound to the conscience, an act of commission or omission, performed in a warzone by the warfighter while engaged in killing behaviors. Collateral damage to innocent civilians, survivor's guilt, unintended deaths where the veteran was the perpetrator or betrayed by higher authority are all toxic events powerful enough to leave permanent scars and no lasting solution for the conscience. Imaginary self-forgiveness offered by VA counselors cobbled together with strenuous renewal therapies stand juxtaposed to authentic forgiveness proffered through the cross of Christ and the creation of the new man in Christ Jesus. The combat veteran has a choice in the therapeutic/soteriological worldview; a choice which gazes down upon two divergent paths that have little in common now and no future intersection on the distant horizon. The NT centurion passages reveal that the military mindset by vocation and training is pre-wired for obedience to a word of authority which principle the missio Dei (mission of God) uses to shatter false norms and allegiances. The cross is not an offer of "self-forgiveness" but the present reality of the world objectively reconciled and forgiven. The conscience of the combat veteran normed by the cross in exchange for all the guilt, shame, sorrow and regret war can muster heals the conscience of the combat veteran suffering moral injury. The arduous military training of the servicemember uniquely positions him/her to receive the sure peace of God through faith alone in the highest Word of authority. The cross of Christ stands immovable, counter-intuitive and a beacon of hope for every combat veteran struggling and engaging in self-healing, self-medication and self-rationalization. The bloody warfare of Christ upon His cross renews the soul and the conscience, again and again and again.
