Book excerpt: "Moods of Inspiration" by Marilyn J. Boersma is a collection of poetry that comes from the author's heart and expresses the innermost feelings and longings of her soul. The author uses her talents as a poet, composer, writer, and musician to tell the story of her life. As a result, these poems are united in theme as they are an autobiographical examination of the author's life. The collection is divided into seventeen chapters that tell of her childhood, her first two marriages, her life with her soul mate trucking across the country, her love of her country, her spiritualistic attitude, and much more. Each chapter begins with a prosaic introduction and explanation of one aspect of the author's life and then is followed by poems on the aforementioned aspect. For instance, when writing about the early years of her life, she first explains, "Therefore this next segment of poems is a postlude of analogies concerning life and love"...Her poem "One Legged Bird" has an example of her instinctive nature to express the feelings of love and compassion; along with her love of nature and animals. She writes: "This gentleness and caring of the one-legged bird, carried a magnificent strength... Even though scorned, he cared for his flock, and saved them at any length!" Because of the broad nature of this collection, it has an appeal to many readers including those who like patriotic, holiday-themed, or love poems, but also to anyone who enjoys learning about another persons life experiences and realizations concerning love; through narration, poems and songs. The author has an innate ability to turn the dark clouds of your subconscious into a brilliant rainbow of happiness and serenity; therefore creating a conscious definition of love that entwines throughout all of her writing...A humbling and thought provoking experience!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Happiness Project meets So Sad Today in this "hilariously witty, unflinchingly honest" book from Words of Women founder Lauren Martin, as she contemplates the nature of negative emotions -- and the insights that helped her to take control of her life (Bobbi Brown). Five years ago, Lauren Martin was sure something was wrong with her. She had a good job in New York, an apartment in Brooklyn, a boyfriend, yet every day she wrestled with feelings of inferiority, anxiety and irritability. It wasn't until a chance encounter with a (charming, successful) stranger who revealed that she also felt these things, that Lauren set out to better understand the hold that these moods had on her, how she could change them, and began to blog about the wisdom she uncovered. It quickly exploded into an international online community of women who felt like she did: lost, depressed, moody, and desirous of change. Inspired by her audience to press even deeper, The Book of Moodsshares Lauren's journey to infuse her life with a sense of peace and stability. With observations that will resonate and inspire, she dives into the universal triggers every woman faces -- whether it's a comment from your mother, the relentless grind at your job, days when you wish the mirror had a Valencia filter, or all of the above. Blending cutting-edge science, timeless philosophy, witty anecdotes and effective forms of self-care, Martin has written a powerful, intimate, and incredibly relatable chronicle of transformation, proving that you really can turn your worst moods into your best life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How transnational modernity is taking shape in and in relation to Asia Fashion and Beauty in the Time of Asia considers the role of bodily aesthetics in the shaping of Asian modernities and the formation of the so-called “Asian Century.” S. Heijin Lee, Christina H. Moon, and Thuy Linh Nguyen Tu train our eyes on sites as far-flung, varied, and intimate as Guangzhou and Los Angeles, Saigon and Seoul, New York and Toronto. They map the transregional connections, ever-evolving aspirations and sensibilities, and new worlds and life paths forged through engagements with fashion and beauty. Contributors consider American influence on plastic surgery in Korea, Vietnamese debates about “the fashionable,” and the costs and commitments demanded of those who make and wear fast fashion, from Chinese garment workers to Nepalese nail technicians in New York who are mandated to dress "fashionably." In doing so, this interdisciplinary anthology moves beyond common characterizations of Asians and the Asian diaspora as simply abject laborers or frenzied consumers, analyzing who the modern Asian subject is now: what they wear and how they work, move, eat, and shop.
