Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, the International Congress on World Evangelization met in Lausanne, Switzerland. Gathering together nearly 2,500 Protestant evangelical leaders from more than 150 countries and 135 denominations, it rivaled Vatican II in terms of its influence. But as David C. Kirkpatrick argues in A Gospel for the Poor, the Lausanne Congress was most influential because, for the first time, theologians from the Global South gained a place at the table of the world's evangelical leadership—bringing their nascent brand of social Christianity with them. Leading up to this momentous occasion, after World War II, there emerged in various parts of the world an embryonic yet discernible progressive coalition of thinkers who were embedded in global evangelical organizations and educational institutions such as the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, and the International Fellowship of Evangelical Mission Theologians. Within these groups, Latin Americans had an especially strong voice, for they had honed their theology as a religious minority, having defined it against two perceived ideological excesses: Marxist-inflected Catholic liberation theology and the conservative political loyalties of the U.S. Religious Right. In this context, transnational conversations provoked the rise of progressive evangelical politics, the explosion of Christian mission and relief organizations, and the infusion of social justice into the very mission of evangelicals around the world and across a broad spectrum of denominations. Drawing upon bilingual interviews and archives and personal papers from three continents, Kirkpatrick adopts a transnational perspective to tell the story of how a Cold War generation of progressive Latin Americans, including seminal figures such as Ecuadorian René Padilla and Peruvian Samuel Escobar, developed, named, and exported their version of social Christianity to an evolving coalition of global evangelicals.

René Padilla (1932–2021). In “The Life and Legacy of C. René Padilla,” historian Daniel Salinas presents the essential events of René’s life and ministry. In 2008, Darren C. Marks published René’s own account of his theological journey in Shaping a Global Theological Mind. We are grateful to reprint “My Theological Pilgrimage,” in which René described the factors that contributed to his development as a theologian and practitioner. Next, the five children René had with his late wife Catharine Feser Padilla offer a heartfelt overview of their father’s life. A sample of tributes from friends and family members then describes not only René’s writings and mental brilliance but also his humility, hospitality, courage, and gentleness as a mentor. And the three poets included herein give testimony to René’s unflagging dedication to encouraging and publishing other writers across the genres. Next, historian Dinorah Méndez reviews René’s last literary venture, Raíces de un evangelio integral: misión en perspectiva histórica and demonstrates that the primary theological emphasis of René’s life—misión integral—has been practiced by the people of God in their various contexts throughout history. Finally, with the combined efforts of several scholars, we have compiled as complete a bibliography of René’s published works as possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book approaches the topic of contextual evangelization from the standpoint of Òthe poor, the powerless, and the opressed.Ó It is, as Orlando Costas explains, Òwritten against the backdrop of the radical evangellical tradition in dialogue with other streams of the larger ecumenical church.Ó Costas begins by exploring the biblical roots of contextual evangelization, focusing on two models. The Old Testament model is illustrated by believers like Esther, who, in her heroic liberation of her people in politically difficult circumstances, showed us how to come to the aid of those who live on the margins of society. The New Testament model is illustrated first and foremost by Christ, who showed us how to minister to the maginalized by operating from Òthe Galilean periphery.Ó On what does one base contextual evangelization? On the Trinity, which Costas defines as community, the foundation for evangelization as a Òcommunal event.Ó The substance of evangelization is Òthe apostolic message of the cross,Ó which announces God's gift of life through the suffering and death of Christ. If we believe that message, we look foreward to life in God's kingdom even as we work and pray for justice and peace. Costas accordingly views conversion not as a single event but rather as a continual transformative process that involves a passage from self-absorption to active communal commitment. Costas's creative, sound blend of evangelical commitment and enlightened social thinking recommends this book to well-informed laypeople as well as pastors, theologians, and scholars.

Robert Pazmino's experiences in a South American base community and the barrios of Costa Rica are here translated into fresh and vital proposals for Christian education in North America. Showing the way between fundamentalism of both the right and left, the author brings into creative partnership an often polarized orthodoxy and 'orthopraxy'. A valuable resource for religious educators, pastors, and seminary students." - Gabriel Fackre Abbot Professor of Christian Theology Andover Newton Theological School Pazmino has shown significant creativity in bringing the insights of liberation theology to bear on the discipline of religious education. He has done this in a manner that is directly relevant to a North American audience, and not merely to those curious about Latin American liberation theology. He writes clearly and succinctly, and his book could be valuable in courses on religious education in seminars and colleges. It is a must for curriculum planners and writers, as well as for directors of Christian education in local churches." - Justo L. Gonzalez Director, Hispanic Summer Program The Fund for Theological Education, Inc.
