After being forced to purge his book collection by a move to a smaller office, Schuermann discovers a dark truth about himself: he is addicted to ten-step books. In this book he collects the things that he has found to be true since he threw away his collection of ten-step and how-to books. Topics of the fifty-two reflections include the minister's call, church-growth seminars, and the local church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year thousands of God's servants leave the ministry convinced they are failures. Years ago, in the midst of a crisis of faith, Kent Hughes almost became one of them. But instead he and his wife Barbara turned to God's Word, determined to learn what God had to say about success and to evaluate their ministry from a biblical point of view. This book describes their journey and their liberation from the "success syndrome"-the misguided belief that success in ministry means increased numbers. In today's world it is easy to be seduced by the secular thinking that places a number on everything. But the authors teach that true success in ministry lies not in numbers but in several key areas: faithfulness, serving, loving, believing, prayer, holiness, and a Christlike attitude. Their thoughts will encourage readers who grapple with feelings of failure and lead them to a deeper, fuller understanding of success in Christian ministry. This book was originally published by Tyndale in 1987 and includes a new preface.

Book excerpt: Is your church viable in the changing marketplace of today--and tomorrow? Today's church market is comprised of four cultural paradigms--Youth, Baby Busters (Generation X), Baby Boomers, and Pre-Boomers. Each has unique characteristics in terms of attitudes, spiritual orientation, values, emotional needs, moral perspective, and lifestyle. This implies significant changes for the church--new approaches to ministry and different methods of communication and interface. Church Wake-Up Call's unique “Ministries Matrix” approach provides effective management techniques to help you define and evaluate duties, priorities, and remedial actions for the future of your ministry in today's multigenerational context. Church Wake-Up Call will inform and enlighten you on these subjects: understanding and using the Ministries Matrix to define purposes and priorities for your church eirecting your ministry toward a particular age group without compromising the church's message increasing your church's visibility structuring your church's management organization creating an effective outreach program . . . and more! Although the book is oriented toward churches and their leadership and has been written largely from an evangelical Christian perspective, the descriptive information regarding each of the generational categories that comprise today's populace is applicable to all Christian organizations, whether they be evangelical or mainline Protestant, Catholic or parachurch. Similarly, the management system, which integrates defined purposes, priorities, and programming options into a well-coordinated plan of action, can be applied by all such organizations.

Book excerpt: This handbook is written to and for the children of God, the Body of Christ, who are called for ministry. The aim and purpose is to equip for the work that the Lord has called them for. How to handle their leadership role, endeavoring not to bring disrepute to this honorable call. King Solomon gives us brilliant ingredients for life. He advises us to have two goals; wisdom - that is, knowing and doing right and common sense. Do not let them slip away, for they fill you with living energy and are a feather in your cap. Proverbs 3:21-22 (LivB) Heavenly wisdom is what we desire to do ministry. It is good and necessary to have academic wisdom, yet so many a times, since this is God's work, we need the wisdom that comes from above. Through experience, I believe this training will prevent a minister of the gospel from falling into unnecessary traps of foolishness. The sadness that we see today is seeing pastors going to divorce courts to undo the covenant that was made in the presence of God and many witnesses. The understanding is mostly that people come to church to be taught how to honor this important institution, how to stay married and how to solve issues using the word of God.Servants of the Most High are to be teachers and not molesters. The ordination classes are given as a final check to have ingrained in the prospective minister, tools that will be necessary in this high calling. It is also to alert of the tactics of the enemy. A minister enters his or her calling, with no intention to molest the body of Christ. The tools given will help the future minister as well the reader to build their own boundaries. Over the years, I observed a necessity that would bridge a gap between zeal and ignorance. To bring God's people to spiritual intelligence and to seriously conform to reverential fear of the Lord. Yes we're are all prone to mistakes from which we get our lessons. Yet with monitoring and being taught, a lot can be minimized.

Each address is delivered not in the flowery speech popular in nineteenth-century England, but in plain-spoken English that still nourishes-and convicts-modern readers. Combining a keen intellect, a passion for Scripture, and a zeal to make Christ known, these sermons are as timeless as their topics. Book jacket.
