Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, http: //www.uni-jena.de/ (Institute for English/ Amererican Studies), course: Hauptseminar, 21 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In the seemingly simple low-rent tragedy "Collectors", Carver's most minimalistic story, a salesman for vacuum cleaners enters the house and life of the I-narrator. A multitude of blanks and, moreover, unfamiliar events and actions contribute to a large extend to the high potential of anxiety of the story. In the following, I will first reveal the most significant blanks concerning the setting, the point of view and the two protagonists. By doing so, I will also attempt to fill them. Book excerpt: From “one of the great short story writers of our time—of any time” (The Philadelphia Inquirer)—comes the original manuscript of the seminal 1981 collection, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. Raymond Carver is one of the most celebrated short-story writers in American literature—his style is both instantly recognizable and hugely influential—and the pieces in What We Talk About…, which portray the gritty loves and lives of the American working class, are counted among the foundation stones of the contemporary short story. In this unedited text, we gain insight into the process of a great writer. These expansive stories illuminate the many dimensions of Carver’s style, and are indispensable to our understanding of his legacy. Text established by William L. Stull and Maureen P. Carroll

"Raymond Carver's America is ... clouded by pain and the loss of dreams, but it is not as fragile as it looks. It is a place of survivors and a place of stories.... [Carver] has done what many of the most gifted writers fail to do: He has invented a country of his own, like no other except that very world, as Wordsworth said, which is the world to all of us." —The New York Times Book Review

The moment Alice learns that Roxanne is visiting her home hamlet of Newland, she couldn't be more suspicious or defensive. A warm welcome is certainly not the plan, let alone falling in love. Despite Eve's warnings that Roxanne is not relationship material, Alice can't ignore her growing attraction. She absolutely trusts Eve's judgment, but taking her advice just might break Alice's heart. Highland Whirl reunites readers with the characters and landscape of Highland Fling in an emotionally enthralling story of trust, friendship, family, and love.

He then explores six works that reflect the core characteristics of the mode: Ernest Hemingway's In Our Time, Raymond Carver's Cathedral, Susan Minot's Monkeys, Jay McInerney's Bright Lights, Big City, Sandra Cisneros's Caramelo, and Cormac McCarthy's The Road. In the conclusion, he discusses contemporary authors and filmmakers whose work represents the ongoing evolution of the category"-- Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: The legendary writer’s definitive story collection, and a literary event of the highest order "Powerful, important, compassionate, and full of dark humor. This is a book that will be reread with admiration and love many times over.” —Vanity Fair Joy Williams has been celebrated as a master of the short story for four decades, her renown passing as a given from one generation to the next even in the shifting landscape of contemporary writing. At long last the incredible scope of her singular achievement is put on display: thirty-three stories drawn from three much-lauded collections, and another thirteen appearing here for the first time in book form. Forty-six stories in all, far and away the most comprehensive volume in her long career, showcasing her crisp, elegant prose, her dark wit, and her uncanny ability to illuminate our world through characters and situations that feel at once peculiar and foreign and disturbingly familiar. Virtually all American writers have their favorite Joy Williams stories, as do many readers of all ages, and each one of them is available here.
