Book excerpt: Semper Fi, Mac brings to life the Marines of World War II -- the tough, battle-trained troops who stormed the beaches of Bougainville, Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa -- in some of the bitterest and bloodiest fighting of the war. Compilied from over seventy-five interviews with surviving officers and enlisted men, these powerful firsthand accounts give us a soldier's-eye portrait of the Marine Pacific war experience -- the camaraderie, the women, the loneliness, the fear -- and the profound emotional as well as spiritual rewards that resulted. Former machine gunners, riflemen, mortarmen, and engineers share the horrifying and humorous stories that defined their days in the Pacific. Through this filter of recollection, one truism is reflected time and again: "there is no such thing as an ex-Marine." A tour-de-force that pays tribute to the spirit of the nation's premier fighting force, Semper Fi, Mac is a multifaceted portrayl of men, war, bravery, honor -- and, as "The Marines' Hymn" so proudly proclaims, fidelity to the military tradition that inspired them.

Till this day I do not know what happened to him." Mrs. Ann M. Lyons, August 7, 1957. Between 1942 and 1944, nearly four hundred Marines virtually vanished in the jungles, seas, and skies of Guadalcanal. They were the victims of enemy ambushes and friendly fire, hard fighting and poor planning, their deaths witnessed by dozens or not at all. They were buried in field graves, in cemeteries as unknowns, or left where they fell. They were classified as "missing," as "not recovered," as "presumed dead." And in the years that followed, their families wondered at their fates and how an administrative decision could close the book on sons, brothers, and husbands without healing the wounds left by their absence. 'Leaving Mac Behind' reconstructs the lives, last moments, and legacies of some of these men. Original records, eyewitness accounts, and recent discoveries shed new light on the lost graves of Guadalcanal's missing Marines--and the ongoing efforts to bring them home.

Book excerpt: This emotional and honest novel recounts a young man's experiences during World War II and digs deep into what he and his fellow soldiers lived through during those dark times. The nightmares began for William Manchester 23 years after WW II. In his dreams he lived with the recurring image of a battle-weary youth (himself), "angrily demanding to know what had happened to the three decades since he had laid down his arms." To find out, Manchester visited those places in the Pacific where as a young Marine he fought the Japanese, and in this book examines his experiences in the line with his fellow soldiers (his "brothers"). He gives us an honest and unabashedly emotional account of his part in the war in the Pacific. "The most moving memoir of combat on WW II that I have ever read. A testimony to the fortitude of man...a gripping, haunting, book." --William L. Shirer

Book excerpt: One Marine's World War II THE OLD BREED . . . is the saga of a naive high school graduate, long hoping to become a Marine, who enlisted in the dark, gloomy days immediately following the overwhelming Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. The memoir details Dana T. Hughes' traumatic experience overcoming the challenges of Marine boot camp at Parris Island, SC. It then follows him through advanced combat training in both barrage balloons as well as special weapons before his outfit was shipped across the Pacific in mid-1942. After a short but idyllic tour in New Zealand, Hughes' unit was quickly detailed north into harms way. This included seven months combat in the malaria-infested, starvation islands of Guadalcanal and Tulagi followed, months later, by transfer to a new outfit in New Zealand for advanced 90 mm AAA gun training. Hughes soon found himself on his way back to the Solomon Islands and was quickly immersed in the heavy fire of the Marine Corps' 1 November '43 landing on Bougainville, where he campaigned for another seven months. Finally, by Fall, 1944, Hughes had put in the time overseas required by the Marine Corps for rotation Stateside, so that--in his words--in early November, he was surprised to reach "My front door in '44."
