It is about embracing our inadequacies, letting go of false securities, turning wounds to wisdom and finding ourselves in the process. It is a book about epiphanies and ah-ha moments when our souls are transformed and everything becomes new again. Sometimes the profound complexities of life and the crucible of trauma and loss can jump-start our spiritual formation so that things like character, authenticity and integrity become more important to us than ever before. It often happens when we are sent to a land of brokenness and in that lonely place, our eyes are mysteriously opened and wonders are revealed…

Book excerpt: Due to the necessity of having to spend the Coronavirus pandemic in self-isolation, the artist Max Siedentopf turned his own home upside down and captured the results with his camera. He piled cans into sculptural towers, stitched together haute-couture clothes, crafted monsters and traps, and invented crazy alternatives to toilet paper. But that wasn't all: he also published all of his actions on Instagram and invited followers around the world to copy his various mottos. This handy survival guide consists of different chapters that shed an ironic light upon the process of getting by at home alone, whether one has chosen to isolate or has been ordered to. From "invent a new meal," to "make a painting using toothbrush," to "balance all your beauty products," it's all there. The best pictures from the series, which now numbers more than one thousand photos, are collected here. An effective way to combat boredom whenever. MAX SIEDENTOPF (*1991 in Windhoek, Namibia)—artist, photographer, video director, freelance art director—was the creative director for the KesselsKramer agency from 2013 to 2020. He is the founder of the quarterly art magazine Ordinary.

Book excerpt: In the house of the Court-Chaplain Eymann, in the bathing-village of St. Luna, there were two parties: the one was glad on the 30th of April that our hero, the young Englishman, Horion, would return from Gšttingen the 1st of May to stay at the parsonage,Ðthe other disliked it; they did not want him to arrive till the 4th of May. The party of the 1st of May, or Tuesday, consisted of the Chaplain's son, Flamin, who had been educated with the Englishman till his twelfth year in London, and till his eighteenth in St. Luna, and whose heart with all its venous ramifications had grown into the Briton's, and in whose ardent breast during the long Gšttingen separation there had been one heart too few; next, of the Chaplain's wife, a native Englishwoman, who loved in my hero a countryman, because the magnetic vortex of nationality reached her soul over land and sea; and, finally, of their eldest daughter, Agatha, who all day long laughed out at everything and doted on everything without knowing why, and who, with her polypus-arms, drew every one to herself who did not live quite too many houses off from her, as food for her heart. The sect of the 4th of May could measure itself with its rival, for it also made out a college of three members. Its adherents were Appel (Apollonia, the youngest daughter), who acted as cook, and whose culinary reputation and certificate of good bakery would suffer by it, if the guest should come before the bread rose; she could well conceive what a soul must feel who should stand before a guest with her hands full of skewers and needles, beside the flat-iron of the window-curtains, and without having even the frisure of her hat, or of the head which was to be under it, so much as half ready. The second adherent of this sect, who ought to have had most to say against Tuesday,Ðalthough he said least, because he could not talk and had only recently been baptized,Ðwas to be carried to church on Friday for the first time; this adherent was the godchild of the guest. The Chaplain knew, to be sure, that the moon sent round her godfather-bidder, Father Riccioli, among the savans of earth, and got them into the church-book of heaven as godfathers to her spots; but he thought it was better for him to take a godfather within a circumference of not more than fifty miles. The Apostles'-day of the churching and the Festival-day of the arrival of the distinguished godfather would then have beautifully coincided; but now the plaguy fine weather was bringing godfather along four days too soon!

Book excerpt: DIVA month before he becomes New York City’s mayor, Sidel confronts a gang of baseball-loving racists/divDIV/divDIVFor the first time in his adult life, Isaac Sidel is no longer a cop. He has moved beyond the halls of One Police Plaza, and is about to take residence in Gracie Mansion, after winning New York’s mayoral election in a landslide. Unable to bear his downtown apartment without his girlfriend—who is in Europe confronting her Nazi-tinged past—the increasingly paranoid mayor-elect has set up shop in a homeless shelter under the name Geronimo Jones. His aides roust him from his hiding spot and have returned him to work when he gets a call from the shelter: Geronimo Jones is dead./divDIV /divDIVA gang of white supremacists roams the city, murdering shelter residents and marking them with Sidel’s alias. They leave notes with each victim, signing them with the names of nineteenth-century baseball players. Mayors don’t go armed, but Sidel isn’t the mayor yet. He and his Glock will settle this problem before he takes his oath of office./div

Book excerpt: Crucial texts, many available in English for the first time, written before and during the Bolshevik Revolution by the radical biopolitical utopianists of Russian Cosmism. Cosmism emerged in Russia before the October Revolution and developed through the 1920s and 1930s; like Marxism and the European avant-garde, two other movements that shared this intellectual moment, Russian Cosmism rejected the contemplative for the transformative, aiming to create not merely new art or philosophy but a new world. Cosmism went the furthest in its visions of transformation, calling for the end of death, the resuscitation of the dead, and free movement in cosmic space. This volume collects crucial texts, many available in English for the first time, by the radical biopolitical utopianists of Russian Cosmism. Cosmism was developed by the Russian philosopher Nikolai Fedorov in the late nineteenth century; he believed that humans had an ethical obligation not only to care for the sick but to cure death using science and technology; outer space was the territory of both immortal life and infinite resources. After the revolution, a new generation pursued Fedorov's vision. Cosmist ideas inspired visual artists, poets, filmmakers, theater directors, novelists (Tolstoy and Dostoevsky read Fedorov's writings), architects, and composers, and influenced Soviet politics and technology. In the 1930s, Stalin quashed Cosmism, jailing or executing many members of the movement. Today, when the philosophical imagination has again become entangled with scientific and technological imagination, the works of the Russian Cosmists seem newly relevant.
