Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Produced by microbes on a large scale, methane is an important alternative fuel as well as a potent greenhouse gas. This volume focuses on microbial methane metabolism, which is central to the global carbon cycle. Both methanotrophy and methanogenesis are covered in detail. Topics include isolation and classification of microorganisms, metagenomics approaches, biochemistry of key metabolic enzymes, gene regulation and genetic systems, and field measurements. The state of the art techniques described here will both guide researchers in specific pursuits and educate the wider scientific community about this exciting and rapidly developing field. Book excerpt: Aquatic microorganisms are tidily related to the carbon cycle in aquatic systems, especially in respect to its accumulation and emission to atmosphere. In one hand, the autotrophs are responsible for the carbon input to the ecosystems and trophic chain. On the other hand, the heterotrophs traditionally play a role in the carbon mineralization and, since microbial loop theory, may play a role to carbon flow through the organisms. However, it is not yet clear how the heterotrophs contribute to carbon retention and emission especially from tropical aquatic ecosystems. Most of the studies evaluating the role of microbes to carbon cycle in inland waters were performed in high latitudes and only a few studies in the tropical area. In the prospective of global changes where the warm tropical lakes and rivers become even warmer, it is important to understand how microorganisms behave and interact with carbon cycle in the Earth region with highest temperature and light availability. This research topic documented microbial responses to natural latitudinal gradients, spatial within and between ecosystems gradients, temporal approaches and temperature and nutrient manipulations in the water and in the sediment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Regulation of Microbial Metabolism contains the proceedings of the Federation of European Microbiological Societies Symposium held in Pushchino, USSR, on June 1-7, 1983. The symposium provided a forum for reviewing the environmental regulation of the metabolism of autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms; regulation of the biogenesis of cell walls and other structures in prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms; and regulation of the secretion of macromolecules and transport of ions and solutes across microbial membranes. Comprised of 52 chapters, this book begins with an overview of some aspects of environmental regulation of microbial phosphorus metabolism, followed by a discussion on the role of covalent interconversion of enzymes in the regulation of microbial metabolism. Subsequent chapters explore the role and regulation of inorganic pyrophosphatase in bacteria; the central metabolism of pseudomonads degrading xenobiotics; the role of nickel enzymes in anaerobic metabolism; and the oxidation of aromatic compounds by microalgae. The book also considers carbon metabolism in phototrophic bacteria under different conditions of growth, along with the transport of solutes and metabolites in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. This monograph will be helpful to a wide range of specialists in the fields of biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, and biotechnology.

Book excerpt: Bacterial Metabolism focuses on metabolic events that occur in microorganisms, as well as photosynthesis, oxidation, polysaccharide formation, and homofermentation. The book first discusses the thermodynamics of biological reactions, photosynthesis and photometabolism, and chemosynthesis. Free energy, photosynthesis, enzymes, and terminology in bacterial metabolism are elaborated. The manuscript then examines acetic acid bacteria and lactic acid bacteria. Discussions focus on lactate, ethanol, glucose, and glycerol metabolism, glycol oxidation, homofermentation, polysaccharide formation, and electron transport systems. The publication takes a look at pseudomonadaceae and nitrogen metabolism as an energy source for anaerobic microorganisms. Topics include metabolism of pairs of amino acids, single amino acid metabolism, oxidation of glycolate and malonate, and oxygenases. The book is a dependable source of information for readers interested in bacterial metabolism.
