Book excerpt: This book covers the latest developments in radar micro-Doppler signatures and non-cooperative recognition of moving targets, for researchers and advanced students of radar systems. Micro-Doppler signatures is a very broad topic with applications in healthcare, security and surveillance. Edited by leading researchers in the field, the book consists of a series of chapters with contributions from different groups of authors who are international experts on their topics. The following topics are covered: multistatic radar micro-Doppler; passive radar approaches for healthcare; sparsity-driven methods for micro-Doppler detection and classification; deep neural networks for radar micro-Doppler signature classification; classification of personnel for ground-based surveillance; multimodal sensing for assisted living using radar; micro-Doppler analysis of ballistic targets; small drones and bird signatures as emerging targets; hardware development and applications of portable FMCW radars; digital-IF CW Doppler radar and its contactless healthcare sensing; L1-norm principal component and discriminant analyses of micro-Doppler signatures for indoor human activity recognition; and micro-Doppler signature extraction and analysis for automotive application. Finally, the editors have written a concluding short chapter that brings together an overview of the field and discusses likely future trends.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work advances the use of radar for target classification. High range resolution (HRR) and micro-Doppler signal analysis both provide radar operators the ability to classify observed targets. However, traditional micro-Doppler analysis does not account for a target moving in range and is therefore not compatible with high range resolution waveforms. We propose the use of a joint-range-time-frequency (JRTF) signature that combines the range information of a HRR radar and the frequency signature of a time-frequency transform. Complicated targets that consist of returns from multiple scatterers have been considered as the independent combination of the return from each target. This is a simplification of the problem and does not consider how the target interaction affect the micro-Doppler signature. These interactions were studied and were found to be the generating factor of unique characteristics within the micro-Doppler signature. The analytic expression for the JRTF signature is derived and analysis is provided for the motion of a simple pendulum. The implementation of the JRTF signature is presented and signal processing techniques for improved JRTF signature manipulation are provided. Finally, we apply the JRTF signature to the classification of human gait. Features extracted from the JRTF signature are compared to features extracted from the micro-Doppler signature, and results show increased classification performance using the JRTF features.

Book excerpt: This study aims to experimentally investigate the feasibility of discriminating human motions with the help of micro Doppler features by using radar. In the first phase, different time-frequency transformations are applied on the simulated walking data and the results of the simulator are compared with field experiments. In the following phase, several field experiments which are in the scope of the simulator are conducted and the experimental data for running, crawling, creeping and walking with the aspect angles of 0, 30, 60 are collected by using a ground surveillance radar. Signal processing steps and micro Doppler processing steps are applied to the collected data and spectrograms are obtained. Six features, which are torso frequency, bandwidth of the signal, offset of the signal, bandwidth without micro Dopplers, the standard deviation of the signal strength, the period of the arms or legs motions are extracted from the spectrograms and the efficiency of the features in motion classification is compared. Lastly, a simple neural network based classifier is constructed. The classification performances of different human motions by neural network classification are examined."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical vibrations or rotations (micro-motion dynamics) of structures on a target may introduce frequency modulation on the radar return from the target's body. The modulation due to this vibration or rotation is referred to as the micro-Doppler (m-D) phenomenon. In this report, the m-D effect is introduced and the mathematics of micro-Doppler signatures, induced by simple sinusoidal vibrations or rotations, is developed. Simulated results confirm that the mathematical analysis is valid. The m-D features derived from a target's vibrational/rotational motion are extracted by utilizing discrete wavelet transforms. During this process, the time domain radar signal is decomposed into a set of components that are represented by different wavelet scales. The m-D features are extracted by sorting the components that are associated with the vibrational/rotational motions of a target and is achieved by applying the inverse wavelet transform. After the extraction of m-D features, time-frequency analysis is employed to analyze the oscillation and to estimate the motion parameters. The vibration/rotation rate is estimated by taking the autocorrelation of the time sequence data. The findings show that these results have higher precision after the m-D extraction since only vibrational/rotational components are employed. The proposed method of the m-D extraction has been successfully applied to both simulated data and experimental helicopter and human data. The preliminary results clearly demonstrate that the m-D signatures can be observed by radar and suggest that applications of m-D should be investigated and exploited for target detection, classification and recognition. It is recommended %hat the exploitation of micro-Doppler, as a new identification/recognition tool, be undertaken as it could impact all aspects of radar sensing and may enhance the effectiveness of Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) and Automatic Gait Recognition (AGR) techniques. We recommend that.
