Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods for the Determination of Organic Matter in Air So much for one series of differences in aeration. But another series exists which is even of greater interest. The aeration of waters, or the absorption of gases by water, varies according to general external conditions, among which temperature and pressure rank highest - not only general pressure, but, so to speak, individual pressure, or, to put it in other terms, the proportion of any given gas in a mixture. Under identical conditions, each gas, moreover, has its own special coetiicient of solubility. While nitrogen is feebly soluble, ammonia is highly so. This fact helps us to understand why it is that the gases which spontaneously dissolve in water in contact with the atmosphere do not, when extracted from the water, yield a mixture even distantly comps rable to air: how it is that the elements of air are not found in water under the proportions they bear to each other in the atmosphere. While water contains the constituents of air, it contains such propor tions of these constituents as are peculiar to it. However. The latter are provided in sufl'icient quantity, and normal river water is quite adequate to maintain the life of aquatic animals. This applies to fresh waters generally, for ponds and lakes have the same conditions as rivers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Organic Analysis The purpose of this work is to give a connected introductory training in organic analysis, especially as applied to plant and animal substances and their manufactured products. No attempt is made to touch upon all important branches of this subject but representative topics are treated in considerable detail with reference both to analytical methods and to the interpretation of results. The greater part of the book is devoted to quantitative methods for food materials and related substances. Standard works of reference and the publications of the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists have been freely used. The nomenclature adopted in these publications has been followed as closely as possible. As a rule, footnotes show the original sources of statements or methods included in the text, while general or additional references are given at the end of each chapter. The references have been carefully selected and are believed to be sufficient to put the reader in touch with the most important literature. The descriptions of methods were written primarily for the use of third-year students in the School of Chemistry, Columbia University, and therefore presuppose a knowledge of inorganic quantitative analysis, elementary organic chemistry, and general physics. The writer takes pleasure in acknowledging his indebtedness to Professor Edmund H. Miller for helpful advice and suggestions throughout the work, and to Mr. Roland H. Williams for assistance in testing methods and in the revision of parts of the manuscript. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Organic Analysis: An Elementary Course in the Identification of Organic Compounds The teaching of Qualitative Organic Analysis is gradually receiving recognition as an important factor in the training Of the chemist. In 1905, the subject was taught in only two or three universities; ten years later courses were offered in from fifteen to twenty of the leading schools in this country; and in 1918 the subject was prescribed for all colleges undertaking the training of chemists under the supervision of the United States Government. Only the armistice prevented the institution of this sweeping innovation in chemical curricula. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
