Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My email to cousin Danny Gasman, professor of history in New York. 8 July 1999 I left IREX 15 months ago. Maybe I’m slow in these matters but by the time I signed out there I had come to the conclusion that my colleagues in the Washington headquarters were likely enjoying second incomes from The Agency. And so I moved back to the relatively cleaner business of strong drinks. As managing director of United Distillers in Russia, I am Mr. Smirnoff, Mr. Johnnie Walker, etc. Very congenial company. Also very politicized business. During my lunchtime speech at the Davis (Russian Research) Center in Harvard a month ago, I was trying to make the point to the handful of economists who had not yet left for vacation that the alcoholic beverages industry is as valid a barometer of the Russian political scene as oil and gas. Fred Bergson, who must be well into his 80s and was once upon a time the dean of American economists specializing in the Soviet Union, seemed not to be buying into my message. However, he maintains a droll sense of humor and asked me at our introductory handshake whether I had learned anything during my stay at Harvard 25 years ago. I told him I had learned to tend bar at Harvard Student Agencies and that this serves me well in my new business functions. He seemed satisfied. Email from Danny Gasman, 14 July 1999 I meant to tell you that I laughed a lot when you told me about your lecture at Harvard. They deserve even heavier doses of the truth...You should keep a diary and publish it. It could be a new edition of “Radischev’s Journey.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While engaging for the general reader thanks to its candid narrative of a life’s path along an unusual career that took its author to remarkable destinations in Eurasia, this book will be especially welcome to specialists in the history of the Soviet Union/Russia during the last quarter of the 20th century because of its wealth of diary entries constituting two-thirds of the text. These capture the mindset of the author and his interlocutors at all levels of society. The book also will be useful to business school students and those embarking on careers in Emerging Markets, where the challenges of maintaining one’s footing can be formidable and where the fastest moving objects in FMCG companies may be the managers themselves. For those who believe that disruptive technologies are something new, the author’s discussion of his choices among industries for employment or to perform consultancy will be enlightening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eyewitness account of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and its aftermath, newly translated into English. Major General Konstantin Ivanovich Globachev was chief of the Okhrana, the Tsarist secret police, in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) in the two years preceding the 1917 Russian Revolution. This book presents his memoirs—translated in English for the first time—interposed with those of his wife, Sofia Nikolaevna Globacheva. The general’s writings, which he titled The Truth of the Russian Revolution, provide a front-row view of Tsar Nicholas II’s final years, the revolution, and its tumultuous aftermath. Globachev describes the political intrigue and corruption in the capital and details his office’s surveillance over radical activists and the mysterious Rasputin. His wife takes a more personal approach, depicting her tenacity in the struggle to keep her family intact and the family’s flight to freedom. Her descriptions vividly portray the privileges and relationships of the noble class that collapsed with the empire. Translator Vladimir G. Marinich includes biographical information, illustrations, a glossary, and a timeline to contextualize this valuable primary source on a key period in Russian history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of a Russian Governor Urussov withdrew from the cabinet, and was elected by a large majority of his constituents to the first Duma. His conduct in the Duma was noted for its frankness and broad democracy, and freedom from narrow party affiliations. His maiden speech may be regarded as the most notable address delivered before the first Duma. In this now celebrated utterance on the pogroms,1 he declared that one must perceive in them a uniform system of attacks carefully planned by the government as a matter of policy. Since that utterance events have demon strated that the several ministries, and the inner court circles are the active instigators of the pogroms by means of the organiza tions of the so-called True Russian Men. These men and their supporters at the court were designated by Urussov, in his speech on the Byelostok massacres, as watchmen and police men by education and pogromists by conviction.
