Book excerpt: The global telecommunication network constantly is being improved to keep up with needs to exchange, store, and process huge, ever-growing amounts of data. This unique, concise textbook provides an introduction to the modelling and performance analysis of telecommunication systems. As new communications technologies emerge and evolve, in parallel engineers work to develop new and enhance existing techniques and even theories to analyze system performance. Communication systems and networks are generally modeled using probability frameworks, and especially queuing systems. However, for model analysis, other mathematical techniques are also widely employed, namely matrix methods of linear algebra. Unlike most textbooks on queueing theory, in particular those dealing with telecommunication applications, the main focus of this volume is on resource-loss-system (ReLS) models. Before discussing ReLS models, it provides an overview of the essential prerequisites, from the basic models and techniques to more complicated matrix-analytical methods of queuing theory. Topics and features: Provides a broad-based introduction Covers matrix and other methods for performance analysis Offers a chapter on application examples and case studies Includes appendixes on random elements, Markov chains, and queuing models Appeals to an interdisciplinary audience This text/reference will be suitable for a broad interdisciplinary audience of students in mathematics and applied disciplines, such as computer science, electronics engineering, and operations research. Dr. Valeriy Naumov works for the Service Innovation Research Institute (PIKE) in Helsinki, Finland, a public non-profit research institute that focuses on theoretical and practical research for services and their improvement. Prof. Yuliya Gaidamaka, Dr. Natalia Yarkina, and Prof. Konstantin Samouylov work in the Dept. of Applied Probability and Informatics of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University) in Moscow, Russia.

Book excerpt: With the diversification of Internet services and the increase in mobile users, efficient management of network resources has become an extremely important issue in the field of wireless communication networks (WCNs). Adaptive resource management is an effective tool for improving the economic efficiency of WCN systems as well as network design and construction, especially in view of the surge in mobile device demands. This book presents modelling methods based on queueing theory and Markov processes for a wide variety of WCN systems, as well as precise and approximate analytical solution methods for the numerical evaluation of the system performance. This is the first book to provide an overview of the numerical analyses that can be gleaned by applying queueing theory, traffic theory and other analytical methods to various WCN systems. It also discusses the recent advances in the resource management of WCNs, such as broadband wireless access networks, cognitive radio networks, and green cloud computing. It assumes a basic understanding of computer networks and queueing theory, and familiarity with stochastic processes is also recommended. The analysis methods presented in this book are useful for first-year-graduate or senior computer science and communication engineering students. Providing information on network design and management, performance evaluation, queueing theory, game theory, intelligent optimization, and operations research for researchers and engineers, the book is also a valuable reference resource for students, analysts, managers and anyone in the industry interested in WCN system modelling, performance analysis and numerical evaluation.

Book excerpt: This book is an expanded third edition of the book Performance Analysis of Digital Transmission Systems, originally published in 1990. Second edition of the book titled Digital Transmission Systems: Performance Analysis and Modeling was published in 1998. The book is intended for those who design communication systems and networks. A computer network designer is interested in selecting communication channels, error protection schemes, and link control protocols. To do this efficiently, one needs a mathematical model that accurately predicts system behavior. Two basic problems arise in mathematical modeling: the problem of identifying a system and the problem of applying a model to the system analysis. System identification consists of selecting a class of mathematical objects to describe fundamental properties of the system behavior. We use a specific class of hidden Markov models (HMMs) to model communication systems. This model was introduced by C. E. Shannon more than 50 years ago as a Noisy Discrete Channel with a finite number of states. The model is described by a finite number of matrices whose elements are estimated on the basis of experimental data. We develop several methods of model identification and show their relationship to other methods of data analysis, such as spectral methods, autoregressive moving average CARMA) approximations, and rational transfer function approximations.
