Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing selected papers on Materials Characterisation this volume presents the latest research in the field. Material and contact characterisation is a rapidly advancing field that requires the application of a combination of numerical and experimental methods. Contributions come from both industry and research communities using computational methods and performing experiments. Demand for high quality production from both industry and consumers has led to rapid developments in materials science and engineering. Current research is focussed on modification technologies that can increase the surface durability of materials. The characteristics of the system reveal which surface engineering methods should be chosen and as a consequence it is essential to study the combination of surface treatment and contact mechanics. The accurate characterisation of the physical and chemical properties of materials requires the application of both experimental techniques and computer simulation methods in order to gain a correct analysis. A very wide range of materials, starting with metals through polymers and semiconductors to composites, necessitates a whole spectrum of characteristic experimental techniques and research methods. The papers in this book examine various combinations of techniques across various topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book is the Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on the Characterisation of Porous Solids, known also as "COPS VIII". The conference is one of a series, held every three years, which covers developments in methods for the characterisation of porous materials, and applications of those methods. The scope of the conference: COPS VIII is concerned with fundamental and applied research on the characterisation of the structure of porous materials, and the relationship between structure and material performance. The scope includes experimental characterisation methods such as X-Ray diffraction, NMR, adsorption, mercury intrusion, and calorimetry; theoretical and simulation methods used to interpret experimental data, such as molecular simulation, classical and statistical mechanical theory, and pore network modelling; and applied research on the impact of measured material properties on performance in applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the huge amount of plastics floating in the oceans, fish and other sea creatures are directly suffering the consequences. On land, city leaders and planners are banning one-use plastics as well as plastic bags from grocery stores in an effort to stem the use. Many countries have made official announcements and warnings concerning the pollution caused from plastic wastes. These urgent developments have stimulated the author to study the problem and write Polymer Waste Management. Plastic recycling refers to a method that retrieves the original plastic material. However, there are many sophisticated methods available for the treatment and management of waste plastics such as basic primary recycling, where the materials are sorted and collected individually. In chemical recycling, the monomers and related compounds are processed by special chemical treatments. Other methods, such as pyrolysis, can produce fuels from waste plastics. These methods and others are treated comprehensively in the book This ground-breaking book also discusses: General aspects, such as amount of plastics production, types of waste plastics, analysis procedures for identification of waste plastic types, standards for waste treatment, contaminants in recycled plastics. Environmental aspects, such as pollution in the marine environment and landfills. The advantages of the use of bio-based plastics. Recycling methods for individual plastic types and special catalysts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing papers from the 3rd International Conference on Energy Production and Management: The Quest for Sustainable Energy, this book discusses the future creation and use of energy resources. It also examines the issue of converting new sustainable sources of energy into useful forms, while finding efficient methods of storage and distribution. An important objective of the book is discussing ways in which more efficient use can be made of conventional as well as new energy sources. This relates to savings in energy consumption, reduction of energy losses, as well as the implementation of smart devices and the design of intelligent distribution networks. This volume provides a comparison of conventional energy sources, particularly hydrocarbons, with a number of other ways of producing energy, emphasising new technological developments, based on renewable resources such as solar, hydro, wind and geothermal. In many cases the challenges lie as much with production of such renewable energy at an acceptable cost, including damage to the environment, as with integration of those resources into the existing infrastructure. The changes required to progress from an economy based mainly on hydrocarbons to one taking advantage of sustainable energy resources are massive and require considerable scientific research as well as the development of advanced engineering systems. Such progress demands close collaboration between different disciplines in order to arrive at optimum solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights methods of characterizing material properties at nano, micro, and macro levels. Chapter 1 addresses nanaoindentation techniques comprehensively. Chapter 2 concerns polymer surface properties using nanoindentation techniques. Chapter 3 deals with the wear properties of dental composites. Chapter 4 compares global and local properties of a lead free solder. Chapter 5 discusses methods of determining plastic zones at the crack tip. Fatigue resistance of a synthetic polymer under different loading conditions is dealt with in Chapter 6. Chapter 7 is a review of methods of measuring fatigue crack growth resistance. Chapter 8 treats bulk and surface properties of coated materials. Chapter 9 presents a method for determining elastic constants using a resonance technique. This book gives a comprehensive state-of-the-art treatment to nanoindentation techniques and applications (four chapters cover metals, polymers, and rubber—novel applications such as creep and impact tests results at micro/nano level are considered). In fact Chapter 1 is a thorough analysis of this technique, its possibilities, and future developments. There are two chapters regarding corrosion and abrasion resistance of metals and dental composites and three chapters treating fatigue—one on rubber that highlights a hitherto unknown mechanism in a chloroprene rubber. There is one chapter on a very precise technique for modulus measurements up to 1200 °C.

Book excerpt: Different physical models for the Snoek-type relaxation in ternary systems (Fe-C-Me) are analyzed from the viewpoint of a distance of interatomic interaction taken into account: For non-saturated from the viewpoint of overlapping of interatomic interaction in b.c.c. alloys the physically sufficient and optimal for the computer simulation is the short-range model, which takes into account the interatomic interaction and the average amount of substitutional atoms in the first coordination shell, only. For high alloyed b.c.c. systems (i.e. with the overlapped interatomic interaction) the carbon atom undergoes an interaction of a few substitutional atoms simultaneously. That leads to the appearance of one broadened Snoek peak. Activation energy of such a peak is summed from the "elastic" and "chemical" interatomic interactions. Experimental results for alloys with b.c.c. solid solution structure and its computer simulations allow to introduce the new criterion for the high alloy state of monophase steels: the high alloyed state corresponds to the situation when substitutional atoms can not be considered any longer as the isolated atoms. From the viewpoint of mechanical spectroscopy this situation corresponds to the appearance of one broadened IF Snoek-type peak instead of two peaks existed for the steels with lower substitutional atom concentration.

Book excerpt: Despite their many common features (mechanical behavior, multi-scale structure, evolutionary and living characteristics, etc.), the tissues that make up the human body each have specific characteristics linked to their function, which require the development of dedicated experimental, theoretical and numerical methods. Mechanics of Living Tissues brings together the work of a number of experts to provide an overview of the most recent approaches developed to study the biomechanical behavior of these soft tissues, in order to understand their structure and apparent behavior. Specific tissues are analyzed across the chapters with the aim of developing solutions that address the clinical problems encountered. Conclusions are then drawn regarding future methods that will improve the current state of knowledge of the behavior of these living tissues, in particular with a view to predicting the effect of a pathology or medical procedure on their apparent properties.
