Book excerpt: With deep roots into the very continent that spawned mankind, the Wise Woman of Kenya reaches out to remind us that we are all human and that we must treat others as we would have them treat us. Grandma Martina uses her homespun parables to instill in our conscious the principle that bigotry and bias has no place in our lives and that hatred is evil and we must accept others, even if they look different.

Book excerpt: This book provides the first systematic description of the linguistic accommodation of Moravian migrants in Bohemia. By analyzing the linguistic behaviour of 39 university students from different parts of Moravia living at a hall of residence in Prague, the author investigates part of an unsubstantiated and ideologically motivated dialect contact hypothesis according to which in informal, everyday communication Moravians in Bohemia accommodate not in the direction of the standard dialect but to Common Czech, a non-standard interdialect that is spoken throughout Bohemia. The study combines a quantitative analysis of six linguistic variables with an ethnographic study of informants' linguistic and social behaviour. A primary objective of the study is to identify the impact of various social criteria on informants' acquisition of Common Czech forms.

Book excerpt: Since the invasion and colonization of Puerto Rico in 1898, all Puerto Ricans are both American citizens and colonial subjects by birth according to international law. Over a third of this population currently lives in the continental U.S. forming one of the nation's most significant "minority" communities. Yet no complete study of mainland Puerto Rican—or Boricua—literature has been written. Until now. Boricua Literature is the first literary history of the Puerto Rican colonial diaspora. The result of a decade of research in archives and special collections in the Caribbean and in the U.S., Lisa Sánchez González argues that the writing of the Puerto Rican diaspora should be considered an integral field of study. Covering 100 years of Boricua literary history, each chapter looks at the single writer or group of writers who are most emblematic of their respective generation, from William Carlos Williams and Arturo Schomburg, to latina feminism and salsa music. The story of an American community of color, Boricua Literature is also about contemporary critical race and gender studies. Unlike virtually all studies concerning mainland Puerto Rican writing, Lisa Sánchez González is less concerned with "cultural identity" than with unearthing a substantive cultural intellectual history. The first explicitly literary historical analysis of Boricua Literature, this definitive study proposes a new and discreet area of literary historical research in American studies.

Book excerpt: Eve K. Sandstrom’s The Violence Beat was “an impressive debut.”* Here the national bestselling author of the Chocoholic Mystery series brings back crime reporter Nell Matthews in a novel about a crimesolver’s secret past—and a killer’s hidden motive… Crime reporter Nell Matthews doesn’t have to go far for a gripping lead story. In fact, the Grantham Gazette’s own basement pressroom has become the scene for the paper’s next explosive headline. Nell and her boyfriend, Detective Mike Svenson, have stumbled on a trail of press ink leading to the body of copy editor Martina Gilroy. And just before dying, she whispered one final word: Alan. Alan was Nell’s father—a man who vanished from her life when she was a child…a man who was implicated in the murder of her mother. For Nell, investigating the story behind Martina’s death means sifting through her own past to discover the truth about her father, exposing a long-buried secret, and surviving the deadline—her own. “The Nell Matthews series will attract legions of new fans. A nicely plotted mystery…[Sandstrom] knows her way around the pressroom.”—The Sunday Constitution “Thoroughly enjoyable.”—I Love A Mystery *New York Times bestselling author Margaret Maron Includes a preview of The Smoking Gun and JoAnna Carl’s The Chocolate Book Bandit.
