MacDonald offers an entirely new view of the New Testament gospel of Mark. The author of the earliest gospel was not writing history, nor was he merely recording tradition, MacDonald argues. Close reading and careful analysis show that Mark borrowed extensively from the Odyssey and the Iliad and that he wanted his readers to recognise the Homeric antecedents in Mark's story of Jesus. Mark was composing a prose anti-epic, MacDonald says, presenting Jesus as a suffering hero modeled after but far superior to traditional Greek heroes. Much like Odysseus, Mark's Jesus sails the seas with uncomprehending companions, encounters preternatural opponents, and suffers many things before confronting rivals who have made his house a den of thieves. In his death and burial, Jesus emulates Hector, although unlike Hector Jesus leaves his tomb empty. Mark's minor characters, too, recall Homeric predecessors: Bartimaeus emulates Tiresias; Joseph of Arimathea, Priam; and the women at the tomb, Helen, Hecuba, and Andromache. And, entire episodes in Mark mirror Homeric episodes, including stilling the sea, walking on water, feeding the multitudes, the Triumphal E

Book excerpt: Beginning with Toy Story in 1995, Pixar Animation Studios has taken American cinema by storm, setting a new standard of excellence in animated filmmaking and earning a fortune in the process. Their movies are both highly entertaining and surprisingly wise, displaying an all-too-rare gift for telling stories which speak about the reality of life and the complexities of the human heart - and making us laugh while doing so. The Gospel According to Pixar looks at how each Pixar film portrays the basic concerns of everyday life and seeks to connect them with a Christian understanding of the world. It touches on themes such as love, identity, fear, freedom, guilt, purpose, and belonging - to name just a few. The Gospel According to Pixar explores these common concerns in hopes of communicating the Gospel in a fresh, persuasive and, above all, fun way. For use with families, churches, and individuals as a teaching series, study guide, or simply as a commentary on these remarkable movies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did the evangelist Mark write two versions of his gospel? According to a letter ascribed to Clement of Alexandria, Mark created a second, more spiritual edition of his gospel for theologically advanced Christians in Alexandria. Clement’s letter contains two excerpts from this lost gospel, including a remarkably different account of the raising of Lazarus. Forty-five years of cursory investigation have yielded five mutually exclusive paradigms, abundant confusion, and rumours of forgery. Strangely, one of the few things upon which most investigators agree is that the letter’s own explanation of the origin and purpose of this longer gospel need not be taken seriously. Mark’s Other Gospel: Rethinking Morton Smith’s Controversial Discovery calls this pervasive bias into question. After thoroughly critiquing the five main paradigms, Scott G. Brown demonstrates that the gospel excerpts not only sound like Mark, but also employ Mark’s distinctive literary techniques, deepening this gospels theology and elucidating puzzling aspects of its narrative. This mystic gospel represents Mark’s own response to the Alexandrian predilection to discover the essential truths of a philosophy beneath the literal level of revered texts.

Book excerpt: Bart Ehrman--the New York Times bestselling author of Misquoting Jesus and a recognized authority on the early Christian Church--and Zlatko Plese--a foremost authority on Christian Gnosticism--here offer a valuable compilation of over 40 ancient gospel texts and textual fragments that do not appear in the New Testament. This comprehensive collection contains Gospels describing Jesus's infancy, ministry, Passion, and resurrection, and includes the controversial manuscript discoveries of modern times, such as the Gospel of Thomas and the most recent Gospel to be discovered, the Gospel of Judas Iscariot. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm Heddings commentary on Marks Gospel captures the fast moving pace of Jesuss ministry in the Galilee before He ascended to Jerusalem for His final and fateful celebration of the Passover. Jesus is truly about His Fathers business as He calls His Disciples, proclaims the good news of the Gospel to the poor, heals the sick and casts out demons and embarks on a preaching circuit designed to reach the region with the message of Gods love. Most important of all is the fact that Hedding demonstrates how Jesuss teaching and deliverance ministry is relevant to every Christian today. This is not just a commentary that gives background information and the meaning of words in the original language; no it is a devotional study of the life of Christ, as we know it, thus enriching the reader and encouraging him or her to be a fully devoted follower of Jesus. If ever a book is a must read it is this one by Malcolm Hedding. In it he gives an in-depth, concise and clear understanding of Marks Gospel for meditation on Jesuss ministry, which will inspire the reader. Eira Goldsworthy Eira Goldsworthy is an author, artist and illustrator working freelance for many international publishing houses. Anyone who knows Malcolm Hedding knows that he loves the Bible and the Gospel message is the foundation of his work as a biblical expositor. Furthermore, Heddings many years spent in Israel have enriched his grasp of the Evangelist Marks historical record. For these reasons and many more, Understanding Marks Gospel is a treasure.
