Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workplace training and education have increasingly been seen as pivotal factors in improving the abilities, skills and competitiveness of industry, and the aim of the Management Charter Initiative (MCI), was to improve managers' practical competency in line with this. Under the MCI, qualification was gained by proving managerial competence in work related tasks, rather than by studying for a theoretical, educational qualification such as an MBA or degree. This book provides a welcome and comprehensive analysis of the MCI within the context of modern management development. It emphasizes the benefits of linking management development with organizational strategy, and includes: * up-to-date analysis of how management development can be measured * the first comprehensive assessment of the impact of using Management Standards * practical illustrations with sixteen in-depth case studies of contemporary organizations. This revealing book is endorsed by the MCI and includes a foreword by Professor Tom Cannon, whose leadership spearheaded and developed the MCI itself.

This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the universal applicability of strategic management concepts. It argues that it is necessary to pay attention to contextual facets of the environment, in particular to societal culture. It also depicts the current planning situation in the banking industry. The culture-boundness of strategy formulation and implementation is challenged and advocated trough discussing planning systems, processes, and heuristics, and contextual influences both an a theoretical basis and with empirical research. The book is based an my doctoral dissertation, which was completed at the Marketing and Banking Departments of the Vienna University of Economics under the auspices of Fritz Scheuch and Gustav Raab. Their teaching, constructive criticism, and encouragement provided the intellectual stimulation for bringing this dissertation to completion. This applies equally to several professors at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Harry Triandis and Anant Negandhi introduced me to cross-cultural research and inter national management. Howard Themas, Marjorie Lyles, and Irene Duhaime helped me to crystallize thoughts. Hanns-Martin Schönfeld, Seymour Sudman and Gerald Salancik challenged my thoughts about organizational behavior and methodology. Richard Watson, Univer sity of Georgia, and Louis Flores of Northern Illinois University were very helpful in providing address material for Australia and Latin America, as well as through assistance with translations. Norihiro Suzuki of Int'l Christian University, Tokyo, and Hiro Matsusaki of Tokyo University helped with Japanese translations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Pivot proposes an integrated approach to facilitate competency development in a more comprehensive way. It examines this approach in the important but seldom studied context of risk management in banks. Risk management weaknesses in banks have persisted in spite of regulatory changes. This Pivot takes inspiration from three unlikely sports heroes to create the proposed integrated approach to risk management competency development, bringing together three competency development concepts hitherto studied in isolation that are more comprehensive and more effective when combined. The author studies the integrated approach under three specific objectives. The concepts are first operationalized into 23 actionable indicators through literature reviews and experts’ reaffirmation. Then, the t-test and discriminant analysis are used to identify how banks across different demographic groups place different emphases on these indicators. Lastly, these indicators are summarized into key themes via factor analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Iles provides a distinctive approach to managing staff selection and assessment in organizations. He discusses not only the dominant psychometric model but also draws upon perspectives from strategic management theory, social psychology, and critical theory. This is an accessible text which discusses developments both in the UK and internationally, provides specific organizational case studies, and describes recent research findings and their implications for organizational practice. It locates techniques and procedures in the contexts of corporate strategy, structure and culture. It shows how organizations have sought to use assessment strategically in the search for competitive advantage: recruiting, selecting, appraising and developing staff in order to bring about organizational and cultural change. The book concludes by applying its frameworks to an area of key significance : the identification, assessment and development of managerial competence.
