Book excerpt: In the 1970s and the early 1980s there was an enormous volume of research and development into the subject of molybdenum disulphide lubrication, much of which was supported by national governments for the benefit of defence, aviation or space activities. There were already some well-established practical guidelines for deciding when and how to use molybdenum disulphide, but there was still a considerable lack of universally-accepted theoretical understanding of some of the important and fundamental aspects of molybdenum disulphide technology. However, the state of knowledge was growing rapidly. In the past fifteen years the situation with regard to the technology of molybdenum disulphide lubrication has stabilised in many respects, and a measure of consensus has been reached about some of the mechanisms involved. The use of molybdenum disulphide has become routine in some industries, and there are many well-established and reputable commercial products available. Except in the high-technology field of physical deposition techniques, especially sputtering, the output of new research publications has fallen from perhaps two hundred a year in the 1970s to fewer than ten a year in the 1990s. In spite of this maturing of the subject, it is clear that there are still many aspects in which disagreements persist about the mechanisms involved, and which as a result are unclear or misunderstood among current, and perhaps even more importantly, potential users. One of the primary objectives of this book is to analyse the various aspects of molybdenum disulphide lubrication technology about which there are still disagreements or controversy, and to attempt to come to firm conclusions about some of the mechanisms involved. In particular, it will place emphasis on the importance and effects of burnishing and film consolidation.

Book excerpt: The use of molybdenum disulfide MoS2 as a solid film lubricant in applications where designs or temperatures preclude liquid lubricants is dependent upon the successful bonding of MoS2 to the surface. An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the basic mechanism of bonding MoS2 and extend application of the bonding to a variety of materials. When MoS2 powder was applied to a surface as a mixture of MoS2 powder and some liquid vehicles, the liquid vehicle decomposed and polymerized to a resin which bound the particles of MoS2 together and to the surface to be lubricated. MoS2 can be bonded by resin-forming viscous liquid vehicles, such as asphalt- and silicone-base varnishes, glycerine, ethylene glycol, polyglycol ether, and corn syrup to a variety of materials, such as steel, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, and glass. The reduction of Fe2O3, formed by preheating steel in air, to Fe3O4 by one of the liquid vehicles (syrup) improves the frictional properties of the solid lubricating film. Rubbing of MoS2 whether dusted, built-up, or bonded by a resin to a surface produced distinct preferred orientation.

Book excerpt: Lubricating films of MoS2 have been prepared by sputter deposition onto steel substrates maintained at different temperatures. The surface chemical compositions and bulk structural properties of the films, before and after rubbing for various times in dry nitrogen gas, were determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and by x-ray diffraction, respectively. Film thicknesses, densities, and morphologies were also measured. Differences in these properties for the films prepared under different conditions provide insight into the mechanisms of film lubrication and failure. It is proposed that lubrication by MoS2 films occurs through intercrystalline slip and that there is an optimal crystalline size that provides maximum wear life under particular application conditions. Methods are suggested for improving film performance, based on particle/crystalline size and lattice spacing arguments and on the electronic properties of MoS2 and related compounds. Keywords: Solid lubricant, Molybdenum sulfate, Crystal structure. (jes).

This book was released on 1952 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of molybdenum disulfide MoS2 as a solid film lubricant, in applications where designs or higher temperatures preclude liquid lubricants, is extended because of the good frictional and thermal characteristics of MoS2. An investigation was conducted to determine (1) practical methods of bonding MoS2 to materials to form solid-film lubricants and (2) friction and endurance characteristics of films so formed. The results indicated that satisfactory films can be formed by brushing on a mixture of MoS2 powder and a resin-forming vehicles such as: thinned asphalt-base varnish, silicone-base varnish, or glycerol (1 part, by weight, MoS2, 2 parts vehicle). Choice of vehicle is governed by application, cleaning, and temperature of curing. Friction and endurance data obtained under high sliding velocities and high surface stress showed that solid-film lubricants (between 0.0002 and 0.0005 in. thick) of MoS2, bonded with the various resins including corn-syrup resin, resulted in good lubricating effectiveness.
