Book excerpt: Though I don't have legal clearance to give juicy details, through much incredible family dysfunction, both of my girls spent a significant amount of years in the custody of their grandmother. This precarious situation led me to, though court-appointed, at first, psychotherapy. Several years later of therapy led me to explore and process my own ambiguous childhood that was riddled with sexual abuse. This exploration spawned another realm of self-discovery that led to an extreme appreciation for radical forgiveness (see next section), for which I am eternally grateful, for the maturation of my own emotional health. The realm of emotional-processing and self-discovery, along with the deisre to leave a by-product of said disocvery to my kids (& others) re: the value in character/value building and steering one's own moral compass, that they may have missed out on, is the largest inspiration, for writing this book. The contents of these pages represent the conversations, experiences and the transference of knowledge of your mothers morals, standards and values via tough and expressed love that we have had up until your 18th birthday(s) respectively. I also want to selfishly, prepare and/or reserve my inevitable place in heaven, by fulfilling my charge as a mom. It is my fervent hope and prayer that every person, who has experienced a fragmented relationship with his/her parent/guardian, can gain enough practical and spiritual advice offered here, to build their own moral compass to live their lives fully and completely in love. Take the necessary steps to heal your relationship(s); it is possible and worth it. When I make the transition/die, dont cry (much) because Im gone; smile in gratitude for having had me in your life for whatever time we had together. I maintain a posture of gratitude for everything and everybody--whether positive or negative. The positive people and events, have created an enormous and expansive sense of gratitude (including, but certainly not limited to, my readers); the negative people and events, have spawned an enormous and expansive perplexity of forgiveness and love. I hope Ive completed my plight as Gods charge as a mother to my own children and many others as well.

Book excerpt: The energy for Tea with Mom: Spiritual Lessons on Life and Death, evolved during the 203 days Dobbins spent acting as his mother's primary caregiver before she died of cancer in 2011. Dobbins began to realize as a caregiver, that in death there is the opportunity for healing, for both the patient and the caregiver. The time he spent with his mother proved to be a transformational journey of deep healing leading him through reconciliation to renewal and ultimately enlightenment. Tea with Mom, begins just after his mother's death, on the Island of Bali in Indonesia. Bali is where Dobbins was finally able to allow himself to grieve, to truly experience the gift of the year he spent caring for the mother who had abused and abandoned him as a child. As his mother's son, he found he was able to recognize the sadness in her life, her internal pain. He felt her sorrow. He saw and understood with empathy, compassion how her life had descended into an abyss of unlived possibility. He saw and recognized the scars of injustice. His journey asks whether it is possible to show up in service of a loved one without healing one's personal story. Whether it is possible to move into a deep place of unconditional loving where one's pain subsides into the nothingness from which it arose. Throughout the book, Dobbins chronicle's the various challenges he lived through and how through the act of caregiving, through prayer, intention setting, forgiveness and acceptance he was able to heal his pain and let go of the aspects of his identity - his "story" - that had created limitation.

Book excerpt: A profoundly moving memoir of caregiving, mourning, and love between a mother and her son—and about the joy of reading, and the ways that joy is multiplied when we share it with others. “A graceful, affecting testament to a mother and a life well lived.” —Entertainment Weekly, Grade A During her treatment for cancer, Mary Anne Schwalbe and her son Will spent many hours sitting in waiting rooms together. To pass the time, they would talk about the books they were reading. Once, by chance, they read the same book at the same time—and an informal book club of two was born. Through their wide-ranging reading, Will and Mary Anne—and we, their fellow readers—are reminded how books can be comforting, astonishing, and illuminating, changing the way that we feel about and interact with the world around us.

Book excerpt: Culinary Aesthetics and Practices in Nineteenth-Century American Literature examines the preponderance of food imagery in nineteenth-century literary texts. Contributors to this volume analyze the social, political, and cultural implications of scenes involving food and dining and illustrate how "aesthetic" notions of culinary preparation are often undercut by the actual practices of cooking and eating. As contributors interrogate the values and meanings behind culinary discourses, they complicate commonplace notions about American identity and question the power structure behind food production and consumption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BOOK CRITICS’ TOP 10 BOOK OF THE YEAR “In its loving, fierce specificity, this book on how to die is also a blessedly saccharine-free guide for how to live” (The New York Times). Former NEA fellow and Pushcart Prize-winning writer Sallie Tisdale offers a lyrical, thought-provoking, yet practical perspective on death and dying in Advice for Future Corpses (and Those Who Love Them). Informed by her many years working as a nurse, with more than a decade in palliative care, Tisdale provides a frank, direct, and compassionate meditation on the inevitable. From the sublime (the faint sound of Mozart as you take your last breath) to the ridiculous (lessons on how to close the sagging jaw of a corpse), Tisdale leads us through the peaks and troughs of death with a calm, wise, and humorous hand. Advice for Future Corpses is more than a how-to manual or a spiritual bible: it is a graceful compilation of honest and intimate anecdotes based on the deaths Tisdale has witnessed in her work and life, as well as stories from cultures, traditions, and literature around the world. Tisdale explores all the heartbreaking, beautiful, terrifying, confusing, absurd, and even joyful experiences that accompany the work of dying, including: A Good Death: What does it mean to die “a good death”? Can there be more than one kind of good death? What can I do to make my death, or the deaths of my loved ones, good? Communication: What to say and not to say, what to ask, and when, from the dying, loved ones, doctors, and more. Last Months, Weeks, Days, and Hours: What you might expect, physically and emotionally, including the limitations, freedoms, pain, and joy of this unique time. Bodies: What happens to a body after death? What options are available to me after my death, and how do I choose—and make sure my wishes are followed? Grief: “Grief is the story that must be told over and over...Grief is the breath after the last one.” Beautifully written and compulsively readable, Advice for Future Corpses offers the resources and reassurance that we all need for planning the ends of our lives, and is essential reading for future corpses everywhere. “Sallie Tisdale’s elegantly understated new book pretends to be a user’s guide when in fact it’s a profound meditation” (David Shields, bestselling author of Reality Hunger).

Book excerpt: For Kate Green, nothing was as important as the happiness and well-being of her two little boys, Reef and Finn, and her loving husband, St. John, known as “Singe.” They had a wonderfully happy family life in Somerset, England. But then tragedy struck—Kate was diagnosed with breast cancer that couldn’t be cured. During her last few days, Kate created what she called Mum’s List. With Singe’s help she wrote down her thoughts, dreams, and wishes, trying to help the man she loved create the best life for their sons after she was gone. Mum’s List reveals Kate’s passionate nature, her free spirit, and even her sense of humor. The list became Singe’s rock as he turned to it again and again for strength and inspiration. Her instructions were simple—items like “look for four-leaf clovers” and “always say what you truly mean”—but the effect they had on Singe, Reef, and Finn was incredibly profound. Singe’s lesson to readers everywhere is that a list like Mum’s List can change your life—and you don’t need to lose someone to make a list and live your dreams. If you’ve ever wondered if you and your family could be living a happier, more meaningful life full of adventure and joy, then this book is for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I'm getting a life's lesson about grace from my mother in the ICU. We never stop learning from our mothers, do we?' Unforgettable is a son's spirited, affecting, and inspiring tribute to his remarkable mother and the love between parent and child. When NPR's Scott Simon began tweeting from his mother's hospital room in July 2013, he didn't know that his missives would soon spread well beyond his 1.2 million Twitter followers. Squeezing the magnitude of his final days with her into 140-character updates, Simon's evocative and moving meditations spread virally. Over the course of a few days, Simon chronicled his mother's death and reminisced about her life, revealing her humour and strength, and celebrating familial love. Unforgettable expands on those famous tweets to create a memoir that is rich, deeply affecting, heart-wrenching, and exhilarating. His mother was a glamorous woman of the Mad Men-era; she worked in nightclubs, modelled, dated mobsters and movie stars, and was a brave single parent to young Scott Simon. Spending their last days together in a hospital ICU, mother and son reflect on their lifetime's worth of memories, recounting stories laced with humour and exemplifying resilience. Unforgettable is not only one man's rich and moving tribute to his mother's colourful life and graceful death, it is also a powerful portrayal of the universal bond between mother and child.

Book excerpt: This “comforting…thoughtful” (The Washington Post) guide to maintaining a high quality of life—from resilient old age to the first inklings of a serious illness to the final breath—by the New York Times bestselling author of Knocking on Heaven’s Door is a “roadmap to the end that combines medical, practical, and spiritual guidance” (The Boston Globe). “A common sense path to define what a ‘good’ death looks like” (USA TODAY), The Art of Dying Well is about living as well as possible for as long as possible and adapting successfully to change. Packed with extraordinarily helpful insights and inspiring true stories, award-winning journalist Katy Butler shows how to thrive in later life (even when coping with a chronic medical condition), how to get the best from our health system, and how to make your own “good death” more likely. Butler explains how to successfully age in place, why to pick a younger doctor and how to have an honest conversation with them, when not to call 911, and how to make your death a sacred rite of passage rather than a medical event. This handbook of preparations—practical, communal, physical, and spiritual—will help you make the most of your remaining time, be it decades, years, or months. Based on Butler’s experience caring for aging parents, and hundreds of interviews with people who have successfully navigated our fragmented health system and helped their loved ones have good deaths, The Art of Dying Well also draws on the expertise of national leaders in family medicine, palliative care, geriatrics, oncology, and hospice. This “empowering guide clearly outlines the steps necessary to prepare for a beautiful death without fear” (Shelf Awareness).
