Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of an individual, who overcomes almost insurmountable odds, recovers and succeeds. His father, having four daughters, won the demographic lottery: the son was born. When just under 4 years old, his father was murdered by a man who then becomes his step-father. That’s when the orphaned son’s survival struggles—his odyssey—begin. Traumatized and scared, he suffered regular abuse, as did the family. Abandoned at age 10, survival struggles intensify. Foster-homes enabled him to finish high-school (10th-grade) at age 14. At age 15, he had to go to work and support the step-father. Progressed rapidly, his last job was at the U.S. Embassy. Despite his 10th-grade education, he obtained admission in a U.S. university and came to the U.S. in 1958. At times surviving on one-meal a day, soon he was working part-time—cleaning bathrooms, washing dishes, scrubbing floors, cleaning animal-pens, etc.; he worked summers in fruit-orchards, lumber mill, and as janitor. Graduated with honors, he earned master’s in 1964 and doctorate in 1968. He is now an emeritus-professor/chair, University of Idaho. Inspired by the memory of his father, the land of opportunity enabled him to overcome the odds and recover his lost life; the American dream fulfilled.

Book excerpt: In ten papers Odyssey Marine Exploration presents the technology, methodology and archaeological results from four deep-sea shipwrecks and one major survey conducted between 2003 and 2008. The sites lie beyond territorial waters in depths of up to 820 metres off southeastern America and in the Straits of Gibraltar and the English Channel. Exclusively recorded using robotic technology in the form of a Remotely-Operated Vehicle, the wrecks range from the major Royal Navy warships HMS Sussex (1694) and the unique, 100-gun, first-rate HMS Victory (1744)to the steamship SS Republic (1865) and a mid-19th century merchant vessel with a cargo of British porcelain. Their study reveals that the future of deep-sea wreck research has arrived, but also that many sites are at severe risk from destruction from the offshore fishing industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the Jewish community's response to the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE. The focus is 4 Ezra, a text that reboots the past by imaginatively recasting textual and interpretive traditions. Instead of rebuilding the Temple, as Ezra does in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, the Ezra portrayed in 4 Ezra argues with an angel about the mystery of God's plan and re-gives Israel the Torah. Drawing on Walter Benjamin, 4 Ezra is analyzed in terms of a constellation composed of elements from pre-destruction traditions. Ezra's struggle and his eventual recommitment to Torah are also understood as providing a model for emulation by ancient Jewish readers. 4 Ezra is thus what Stanley Cavell calls a perfectionist work. Its specific mission is to guide the formation of Jewish subjects capable of resuming covenantal life in the wake of a destruction that inflects but never erases revelation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Christian Perspective on the Joys of Reading Reading has become a lost art. With smartphones offering us endless information with the tap of a finger, it's hard to view reading as anything less than a tedious and outdated endeavor. This is particularly problematic for Christians, as many find it difficult to read even the Bible consistently and attentively. Reading is in desperate need of recovery. Recovering the Lost Art of Reading addresses these issues by exploring the importance of reading in general as well as studying the Bible as literature, offering practical suggestions along the way. Leland Ryken and Glenda Faye Mathes inspire a new generation to overcome the notion that reading is a duty and instead discover it as a delight.
