Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lord Lawrence John Laird Mair Lawrence was born in 1811 and died in 1879, being sixty-eight years of age. Within that time he entered the Civil Service of the East India Company, governed the Punjab then the most difficult province in India, took a very prominent part in the War of the Mutinies, was by many called the saviour of the Indian empire, and became Viceroy of India. By reason of his conduct in these capacities he is regarded as a man of heroic simplicity, and as one of the best British type, to be reckoned among our national worthies. I shall write the following account of him as a man of action, partly from authentic records, but chiefly from personal knowledge. I was his Secretary during some of the most busy and important years when he was governing the Punjab, and one of his Councillors when he was Viceroy. My acquaintance with him began in 1851, and continued on intimate terms till 1870, from which time until his death I was separated from him by distance. Thus I have been in great part an eyewitness of what is to be related of him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Henry Lawrence, the Pacificator England was convulsed under the shock of the outbreak of the Bengal Mutiny. Reinforcements were being prepared with intense energy. Sir Colin Campbell had been sent out to India to take the military command; Lord Canning was at the helm in Calcutta, but the situation was so critical that the post might become vacant at any moment; and the succession to it, under such a contingency, must be settled at once. The man best fitted to deal with the crisis, and available on the spot, had to be selected. It was under these circumstances that the Court of Directors of the Honourable East India Company resolved, on July 22, 1857, that 'sir Henry Mont gomery Lawrence, be appointed provisionally to succeed to the office of governor-general of India on the death, resignation, or coming away of Viscount Canning, pending the arrival of a successor from England.' This did not necessarily involve the selection of Sir Henry for the permanent post of governor-general. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lawrence The earliest portraits of which there is a distinct record are those of Mr. And Mrs. (afterwards Lord and Lady) Kenyon, which were drawn in 1775, the lady in profile, because, the child said, her face was not straight. About this time Thomas was sent to his only school, at The Fort, near Bristol, which was kept by a Mr. Jones. With the exception ofa few lessons in French and Latin from a dissenting minister in Devizes, this was the only regular education he received; but it would appear from an anecdote related of him in mature life that he had some acquaintance with Greek.
