Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Anton and Theodor van Dreveldt grew up in Emmerich, Prussia, as the sons of a Catholic priest and his housekeeper - a situation their father tried to disguise by presenting himself as their uncle. As young men, both Anton and Theodor found their lives increasingly troubled. Anton drank heavily, and Theodor's career was jeopardized by his participation in a banned political organization. These troubles, combined with growing Prussian authoritarianism, led to their independent emigrations to the United States, Theodor in 1844 and Anton in 1849."--BOOK JACKET. "Theodor, tormented by malaria and financial difficulties, returned to Germany, but Anton and his son Bernhard, who emigrated after Theodor's return, remained. This separation helped produce a remarkable body of correspondence describing the van Dreveldts' often troubled relationships with each other, their homeland, and America. Their letters compare the age-old tribulations of Europe against the promise and challenges of a new country. The van Dreveldts' experience provide a fascinating glimpse into the complexities of immigrant life."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trev Lynn Broughton takes an in-depth look at the developments within Victorian auto/biography, and asks what we can learn about the conditions and limits of male literary authority. Providing a feminist analysis of the effects of this literary production on culture, Broughton looks at the increase in professions with a vested interest in the written Life; the speeding up of the Life-and-Letters industry during this period; the institutionalization of Life-writing; and the consequent spread of a network of mainly male practitioners and commentators. This study focuses on two case studies from the period 1880-1903: the theories and achievements of Sir Leslie Stephen and the debate surrounding James Anthony Froude's account of the marriage of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virginia Woolf, in a mixture of distaste and admiration, called them "the literary underworld," although their names were in the mainstream in the England of World War I and the 1920s. Today for the most part unfamiliar, then they connected variously, and not unimportantly, with Shaw and H. G. Wells, Aldous Huxley and D.H. Lawrence, not to overlook Pound, Eliot, E. M. Forster, and Edwin Muir, among countless others. The pages of A. R. Orage's The New Age and John Middleton Murry's numerous periodicals (Rhythm, The Blue Review, The Athenaeum, Adelphi) were the intellectual forums of their day, the mirrors of the trends in taste and social concerns. The five principals in John Carswell's gracious, perceptive reminiscence were not of a single coterie. Rather, they shared in a particular kind of literary life: professional without being academic, dedicated without being regimented, all were devoted to careers which were often the only source of their livelihoods. In the final analysis, none were creative giants: Katherine Mansfield now remembered less for her stories, and Murry for his criticism, than as Lawrence's Gudrun and Gerald (Women in Love); "Kot's" role in introducing Russian literature becomes a dim footnote; the wild Beatrice Hastings perhaps glimpsed in a biography of Modigliani in Bohemian Paris; the fine imprint of Orage's editorial genius, faded. Yet they were intrinsic to their time, and their serious and passionate lives and letters are quickened in these glowing pages.
