Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading the World’s Stories is volume 5 in the Bridges to Understanding series of annotated international youth literature bibliographies sponsored by the United States Board on Books for Young People. USBBY is the United States chapter of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), a Switzerland-based nonprofit whose mission is bring books and children together. The series promotes sharing international children’s books as a way to facilitate intercultural understanding and meet new literary voices. This volume follows Children’s Books from Other Countries (1998), The World though Children’s Books (2002), Crossing Boundaries with Children’s Books (2006), and Bridges to Understanding: Envisioning the World through Children’s Books (2011) and acts as a companion book to the earlier titles. Centered around the theme of the importance of stories, the guide is a resource for discovering more recent global books that fit many reading tastes and educational needs for readers aged 0-18 years. Essays by storyteller Anne Pellowski, author Beverley Naidoo, and academic Marianne Martens offer a variety of perspectives on international youth literature. This latest installment in the series covers books published from 2010-2014 and includes English-language imports as well as translations of children’s and young adult literature first published outside of the United States. These books are supplemented by a smaller number of culturally appropriate books from the US to help fill in gaps from underrepresented countries. The organization of the guide is geographic by region and country. All of the more than 800 entries are recommended, and many of the books have won awards or achieved other recognition in their home countries. Forty children’s book experts wrote the annotations. The entries are indexed by author, translator, illustrator, title, and subject. Back matter also includes international book awards, important organizations and research collections, and a selected directory of publishers known for publishing books from other countries.

Book excerpt: In spare, poignant, direct prose, I Hate Everyone paints a nuanced and honest portrait of the complex emotional lives of children. "I hate everyone." In your worst mood, it's a phrase you might want to shout out loud, even if, deep down, you don't really mean it. Set at a birthday party, this disgruntled, first-person story portrays the confusing feelings that sometimes make it impossible to be nice, even-or especially-when everyone else is in a partying mode. A gorgeous, poetic contemplation, sure to elicit a reaction from readers. A worthy successor toAlexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

Book excerpt: The Angry Little Girl is a book written to validate the loss, anger and lack of control children in foster care can feel. It is written through the eyes of a seven year old that was in foster care for 4 years before being adopted. It discusses how unsafe she felt moving from one foster home to another and it gives in-sight to how even a safe environment can feel scary when you are little. It also validates feelings of loss and rejection that arose from each move. This book is written to help children in foster care understand it is ok to be angry sometimes and sometimes life is not fair. It is not the fault of the children in foster care, they are little. It is the job of the adults to make good decisions and keep them safe.

Book excerpt: Naomi Jacobs went to sleep one night in 2008 as a 32-year-old mother, and woke up the next morning believing she was a fifteen-year-old school girl. She did not recognise the house she woke up in, though it was hers, nor her ten-year-old son, Leo. As far as she was concerned, she was in 1992 when John Major was Prime Minister, before the world had been blessed with mobile phones, DVDs or reality TV. She didn't know it, but she had dissociative amnesia. With the help of her personal diaries and those close to her, Naomi set about piecing together as much as she could of her missing years. What she discovered shocked her. As she dug deeper, she began to experience disturbing flashbacks of traumatic events. Would Naomi ever find her way back to the person she once was? Did she even want to? Funny and moving, Forgotten Girl is ultimately an inspiring story of loss and redemption, and the power of second chances.

Book excerpt: Leaving Earth was no longer safe as a human woman… Offered a trainee position in the Alliance, Hazel is on her way to Inea, the First Planet of the Alliance. She’s sad to miss the holiday season on Earth, and more than a bit concerned about the recent Krezlian attacks on spaceships leaving the solar system, but there’s no turning back now. When her worst nightmare comes true and the Krezlians attack the ship she’s on, Hazel can only put her trust on a beastly Ezak-X Alliance soldier. But why does she feel so drawn to him…? The word “vacation” didn’t exist in the Ezak-X vocabulary… Zeriq couldn’t have it worse. Just as he’s on leave from the military, unarmed and unprepared, the damned Krezlians attack the Alliance ship he’s on. Although he’d rather join the fight, a small human female tags along with him, clearly expecting him to get her to safety. He can’t just ignore her. But when their emergency shuttle malfunctions, they find themselves stranded on a frozen alien planet. Far from Inea, possibly even farther from Earth, they must fight the extreme conditions to survive. And although the temperature on the planet freezes, his body burns for the female… Miracle of the Beast is a steamy holiday romance set in the Mate of the Beast universe. Complete with a HEA and no cliffhangers.
