This, their record, is written for Berkshire readers. If it shall, in after years, enable my comrades to recall the events and some of the emotions of our soldier-life; if it shall tend to unite us in sympathy; if it shall present to our friends a fuller view of our deeds and experiences, and bring out more vividly the merits of our "fallen brave," I shall be satisfied. Writing it has been to me a "labor of love." I have written fully and earnestly of the principles underlying this struggle; otherwise, I have confined my pen to our regimental life as it came within my observation and experience. It would be sad to believe those principles were no part of that life. My chief regret is, that fuller data did not enable me to do justice to all our dead. The engraving of Colonel Bartlett, one of the best evidences of the skill of the leading engraver of New York, A. W. Ritchie, needs this remark: On applying for a photograph, from which to obtain an engraving, the Colonel sent me several, taken in different styles, by different artists, at different times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thirty-Ninth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, 1862-1865 More than fifty years after the organization of the Thirty-ninth Regiment and its departure for the seat of war, its printed history makes its appearance. The long delay has not arisen from any lack of desire for its preparation, nor on account of want of material. For many long years it was supposed that the recital was in preparation, but the comrade to whom the task was intrusted went away into the other world before its completion, and survivors of the Regiment began to wonder if their story of long marches, fierce fighting and unspeakable suffering in Rebel prisons ever would be told. At the annual reunion of the Veteran Association in 1911 it was voted to proceed with the long cherished proposition, and a committee was appointed to carry out the proposal; after two years and a half the survivors of that committee present this volume to the patient waiters among the living veterans and to the families and descendants of those who have made the final crossing. Readers of the book should bear in mind that it is very far from being a history of the war, nor does it discuss campaigns and battles in their entirety; on the contrary every effort has been made to describe the part borne by the Regiment in said campaigns and engagements. Long shelves in the large libraries of the country are already laden with great volumes descriptive of the War of the Rebellion as a whole and of detached portions thereof; as many more have been written of eminent individual experience, like the recollections of Grant, Sherman, Sheridan on the Union side and of Beauregard, Johnston and Longstreet among the Confederates, but the story of the great struggle will not be fully told until that of every regiment finds its way into print. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Fifty-Second Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers September, 1862. - The war was dragging slowly, wearisomely on, and a half-year had passed since the stars and stripes had been assailed by rebellious foes in the harbor of Charleston, S.C., a year and two months since the disastrous defeat of the Union Army at Bull Run. The first impulse of enthusiasm resulting from the firing upon Fort Sumter in April, 1861, had carried us hopefully through the first campaign, which ended in disaster and shame in June, 1861. Then came the real hour of trial. This country never saw so dark a week as that which followed that disgrace. "Are our men cowards when danger is to be faced?" was asked. "Will the North give up in despair, and yield principle and honor?" "No," was the emphatic reply. "We know we are right, and we will prevail." Armies melted away like dew before the sun, but new ones sprung up to take their places. Fifty thousand failed in June, 1861. Two hundred thousand are in camp in December of that year. Disaster followed next year on the peninsula; but the strength and courage of the loyal North had not been exhausted, and in the public mind the determination was stronger than ever to put down the rebellion and maintain, at all hazards, the unity of the nation. On the fourth day of August, 1862, an order was issued from the War Department for a draft of three hundred thousand troops, to serve nine months; but the people and the State officials were opposed to a draft, and it was not resorted to, and the call was for three hundred thousand volunteers. The quota demanded of Massachusetts under this call was nineteen thousand and ninety men. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
