Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Environmental Studies. THE UPLANDS: BOOK OF THE COUREL AND OTHER POEMS by the great Galician poet Uxío Novoneyra, translated by Erín Moure. Novoneyra is a poet and man of the land, and stands with Lorca as a poetic visionary of 20th century Spain. He was devoted to his region, the mountainous Courel, to its variant of Galician and to its names and ways, as well as to Galician culture as a whole, to the expression of all minority cultures and to freedom from imperialism, war, and economic expansionism. His oeuvre--rich in sound, syllable, silence and gesture--reveals him as an eco-poet before the concept existed. Os Eidos [THE UPLANDS], first published in 1955 and still in print today, is his monumental work.

So many cries are uttered nowadays, That scarce a song, however clear or true, Can thread the jostling tumult safe and reach The ears of men, buzz-filled with poor denays: Barb Thou my words with light! Make my song new! And men will hear, whether I sing or preach." - George MacDonald. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2011-02-16 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report MPs recommend changes to the way money from the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is used to support hill farmers. Farming, in particular grazing livestock, is an essential part of the landscapes and traditional systems of land management in these beautiful and fragile areas. A return to headage payments in limited circumstances, with appropriate environmental conditions to prevent overstocking, would provide fairer funding to hill farmers. The Committee also calls on the Government to do more to enable hill farmers to diversify into other land management activities-such as carbon storage and water quality schemes. The report calls on the Government to demonstrate a stronger commitment to upland communities. Having abolished the Commission for Rural Communities - the public body that advised Government on rural issues -the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs must ensure that rural policies and their delivery are not neglected. Ministers should: publish a strategy for the uplands that sets out a clear action plan with practical measures to be implemented immediately; provide strong leadership to make sure that rural and upland communities get a fair deal; create a statutory definition of the uplands to assist in targeting policy; ensure all farmers and rural communities can get access to development grants once RDAs have been abolished; work across Government to put in place policies that support those that live and work in the uplands, in particular rolling out super-fast broadband for remote rural communities and increasing the availability of affordable housing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jones attacks what he sees as the historical dismissal of mountain religious life, as supported by nineteenth- and twentieth-century missionary movements bent on changing mountain life through better religion. He explores the creation and perpetuation of negative stereotypes as mainline Christians contended that "Upland Christians" had to be saved from themselves.
