Book excerpt: What makes liberals tick? Can some rational sense be made of their often bizarre policies and behavior? It seems that liberalism is no longer merely a political orientation, but has turned into an overarching ethos or worldview - almost a quasi-religion. This book describes the evolution of the liberal or "progressive" side of the political spectrum into first, an alternative system of piety - a virtue-signaling, non-religious moral creed; and then, into what it is today: an intolerant, repressive orthodoxy which its adherents attempt with Draconian zeal to impose on all citizens.

Book excerpt: A confession and manifesto from a senior leader in the emerging church movement. A Generous Orthodoxy calls for a radical, Christ-centered orthodoxy of faith and practice in a missional, generous spirit. Brian McLaren argues for a post-liberal, post-conservative, post-protestant convergence, which will stimulate lively interest and global conversation among thoughtful Christians from all traditions. In a sweeping exploration of belief, author Brian McLaren takes us across the landscape of faith, envisioning an orthodoxy that aims for Jesus, is driven by love, and is defined by missional intent. A Generous Orthodoxy rediscovers the mysterious and compelling ways that Jesus can be embraced across the entire Christian horizon. Rather than establishing what is and is not “orthodox,” McLaren walks through the many traditions of faith, bringing to the center a way of life that draws us closer to Christ and to each other. Whether you find yourself inside, outside, or somewhere on the fringe of Christianity, A Generous Orthodoxy draws you toward a way of living that looks beyond the “us/them” paradigm to the blessed and ancient paradox of “we.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theosis, or the principle of divine-human communion, sparks the theological imagination of Orthodox Christians and has been historically important to questions of political theology. In The Mystical as Political: Democracy and Non-Radical Orthodoxy, Aristotle Papanikolaou argues that a political theology grounded in the principle of divine-human communion must be one that unequivocally endorses a political community that is democratic in a way that structures itself around the modern liberal principles of freedom of religion, the protection of human rights, and church-state separation. Papanikolaou hopes to forge a non-radical Orthodox political theology that extends beyond a reflexive opposition to the West and a nostalgic return to a Byzantine-like unified political-religious culture. His exploration is prompted by two trends: the fall of communism in traditionally Orthodox countries has revealed an unpreparedness on the part of Orthodox Christianity to address the question of political theology in a way that is consistent with its core axiom of theosis; and recent Christian political theology, some of it evoking the notion of “deification,” has been critical of liberal democracy, implying a mutual incompatibility between a Christian worldview and that of modern liberal democracy. The first comprehensive treatment from an Orthodox theological perspective of the issue of the compatibility between Orthodoxy and liberal democracy, Papanikolaou’s is an affirmation that Orthodox support for liberal forms of democracy is justified within the framework of Orthodox understandings of God and the human person. His overtly theological approach shows that the basic principles of liberal democracy are not tied exclusively to the language and categories of Enlightenment philosophy and, so, are not inherently secular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern theology is a maze of conflicting beliefs. In fact, the shape of contemporary theology has changed so much in this century--and especially since the 1960s-- that it's hard to make sense of it all. Of not only what the various belief systems mean, but how we came to be where we are within those systems. In The End of Liberal Theology, respected theological lecturer and author Peter Toon introduces evangelicals to modern forms of doctrine and theology--both Protestant and Roman Catholic. He does so by discussing the basics of orthodoxy, by speaking to the various points of accommodation that have resulted in new forms of theology, and by dissecting liberalism and its effect on evangelicalism. This book is thus a "family tree" of modern theology, showing how the various contemporary forms, and those that preceded them, are related to each other. With its comprehensive analysis, The End of Liberal Theology is destined to be a yardstick by which critical evaluations of current doctrines--both old and new, liberal and conservative--will be made.

Book excerpt: The author believes that a large number of intelligent people in Britain are sincerely drawn towards the Church, but hesitate to identify themselves with it so long as they would thereby be deemed to hold beliefs which even the most cautious thinkers must feel to be impossible for the modern mind. In order to address these concerns, Dr Cleobury offers an accessible argument that the essential elements of Christian faith can be grounded in rational, philosophical thought, rather than in the blind acceptance a complex mass of dogma. His arguments are wide-ranging, covering the relation between religion and moral conduct, human survival after bodily death, the Christian concept of human individuality, theology as an empirical science, the historical Jesus, psychical research and Christian eschatology.
