Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Excerpt from Legends of the Wailuku: As Told by Old Hawaiians and Done Into the English Tongue Fed from the great watershed of Hawaii far up the densely wooded flanks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea - often snow-capped in winter - the Wailuku River roars through the very center of Hilo, principal town of the Island of Hawaii. There are many vague stories as to why the Wailuku River was so named. In the Hawaiian tongue Wailuku means literally "destroying water." In olden times before there were bridges and other safeguards the river wrought considerable damage to property and during the rainy season it took its toll of human lives. Legends connected with the Wailuku tend to confirm the belief that it was named for its violent habits. Long ago, so one legend goes, the much dreaded Kuna (dragon) blocked the gorge below Rainbow Falls with intent to back the waters up and drown the goddess Hina, who dwelt in the great cave for which the falls form a curtain. How her son, the demi-god Maui, came to the rescue, saved his mother, and finally hunted Kuna from his lair up the river and slew him, is told in the legend, "The Last of Kuna."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legends of a people are of interest to the scholar, the thinker, and the poet. They tell us of the struggles, the triumphs, and the wanderings of the people, of their thoughts, their aspirations; in short, they give us a twilight history of the race. As the geologist finds in the rocks the dim records of the beginnings of life on our planet, the first foreshadowings of the mighty forests that have since covered the lands, and of the countless forms of animal life that have at last culminated in Man, so does the historian discover in the legends of a people the dim traces of its origin and development till it comes out in the stronger light of the later day. So it is with the legends of the Hawaiians, or of the Polynesian race. We see them, very indistinctly, starting from some distant home in Asia, finally reaching the Pacific Ocean, and then gradually spreading abroad over its islands till they dominate a large portion of its extent. In bringing together this collection of Hawaiian legends, the author of this little book has conferred a great favor upon all those residents of Hawaii and of those visitors to its shores who may take an interest in its original inhabitants, once an exceedingly numerous people, but now a scattering remnant only. To that native race this little book will be at once a joy and a sorrow; to the heart of the haole, who has lived among them, known them intimately for thirty years or more (as has the writer of this Foreword), and learned to love them, this collection of the legends of old Honolulu brings a warm "Aloha!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Out of this rich material Mr. Westervelt makes an interesting book. Most persons never outgrow fairy stories, and these have novelty and the glamor that we associate with far-off tropical Polynesia." -Boston Transcript "Mr. W. D. Westervelt has lived for many years in the Hawaiian Islands, and this interpretation of Hawaiian mythology shows a depth of sympathy commensurable with that of Lafcadio Hearn for the Japanese. Some of the stories, as for example the last in the volume, 'The bride from the under-world,' are told with spirit and charm." -The Dial "Not only to the anthropologist but to the general reader as well these myths have their appeal, and the debt to the Mr. Westervelt for collecting and translating them is far from small." -Springfield Republican "These legends exhibit surprising variety of subject matter and treatment, from pure nature myth with delicacy of coloring and vividness of imagination, to gruesome tales of cannibal dogs and cannibal ghosts, of shark-gods and dragon-goddesses. This interesting and valuable collection forms a continuation of a previous volume, 'Legends of Old Honolulu.'" -The Sewanee Review "The mythology of Hawaii follows the laws upon which all myths are constructed. The islanders have developed some beautiful nature myths. Certain phenomena have been observed and the imagination has fitted the story to the interesting object which has attracted attention." -Boston Transcript TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction I. Book excerpt: "Mr. Rice's theory as to the origin of these legends is based on the fact that in the old days, before the discovery of the islands by Captain Cook, there were bards and storytellers, either itinerant or attached to the courts of the chiefs...these bards or storytellers sometimes used historical incidents or natural phenomena for the foundation of their stories, which were handed down from generation to generation." Hawaiian Legends (1923) is a collection of Hawaiian myth and folklore complied and translated by William Hyde Rice. Having been born and spent his entire life immersed in the culture of Hawaii, Rice spent many years collecting and translating the stories he had heard in his childhood, gathered through books and sought out from elders. Determined to capture the authentic spirit of the Hawaiians, his cumulative volume is a celebration of the days of old Hawaii and the stories that have lived through the ages. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of William Hyde Rice's Hawaiian Legends is a classic of Hawaiian literature reimagined for modern readers.
