Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marie Delcourt’s brilliant study of the Oedipus legend, an unjustly neglected monument of twentieth-century classical scholarship published in 1944 and issued here for the first time in English translation, bridges the gap between Carl Robert’s influential Oidipus (1915) and the work of Lowell Edmunds seventy years later. Delcourt studies the legend in its various aspects, six episodes that have equal weight and that stress the same themes: greatness, conquest, domination, the right to rule—all of them bound up with the idea of kingship. Together they form the biography of a Theban hero, the fullest account that has come down to us about the prehistory of sovereign power among the ancient Greeks. Delcourt does not suppose that Oedipus, or indeed any other Greek hero, was a historical figure. The personality familiar to us from the plays of the tragedians of the fifth century—our oldest source, and a very late one—was the result of their extraordinary artistry in linking together themes rooted in very ancient social and religious rites that in the interval had come to describe the feats of Oedipus, then his life, and finally his character. It was in order to explain these rites, whose meaning had ceased to be understood, that myths and legends were invented in the first place. Oedipus, Delcourt argues, is the archetype of all heroes of essentially (if not exclusively) ritual origin, whose acts were prior to their person. This is a very different— and far more complex—Oedipus than the one rather implausibly imagined by Freud. More generally, the origin and transmission of the Oedipus legend tells us a great deal about the strength and persistence of public memories in prehistoric societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's treasure buried beneath Texas soil or stowed in caves covered over by stones. It might be the mother lode that's waiting to be uncovered or some Spanish pirate's chest of jewels and doubloons. Nearby a ghostly figure walks the dunes, or is it just an illusion brought on by the approaching dust storm? In this new mass market edition, J. Frank Dobie has collected accounts of some of the best known tales of booty hidden in Texas hill and dale as well as some eerie stories and the origins of Texas flowers, names, and streams. You will learn about "The Enchanted Rock in Llano County," "Lafitte's Treasure Vault," and "The Holy Spring of Father Margil at Nacogdoches." These lively stories reveal the love for adventure, independence, and mystery that has made Texas the state it is. And just as Dobie hoped, with these tales readers from all over can see the "richness of their own traditions." Dobie believed that worthwhile literature about this region had to be derived from an understanding of its life, lore, and history. Legends of Texas indirectly led to the founding of the Texas Folklore Society, the nation's second oldest folklore organization.

He could do things on a basketball court no one else could--and that's why they called him "White Jesus." But after a serious knee injury and clashes with his college coach derailed his career, Bill descended into a self-destructive lifestyle of drinking, drug abuse, and womanizing. He was going to be just another washed-up playground legend--until he encountered Jesus Christ and became something far more. Once known for his 44-inch leap, Rieser is still looking up these days and his vertical leap goes higher than he could ever have imagined. So if you're looking for something that will get you to that new level of trust and closeness with God you're yearning for, this book is your ticket! Bill's infectious faith will change the way you view God, His power, His Word, and prayer.

Book excerpt: Jerome is a slave. He must wake every morning to the knowledge that he is a piece of property belonging to Alfred Campbell, a plantation owner. But things are changing. There are rumblings in the slave community about abolition and Jerome begins to look forward to the day when he will be a free man. That day cannot come too soon as he has fallen in love with Anita, Alfred's daughter. Their love cannot remain a secret forever and is under increasing pressure from Jerome's relationship with Alice, another slave. As the drama moves to its inexorable conclusion, Jerome is faced with a host of choices: will he choose Alice or Anita, poverty or wealth, slavery or freedom. Only Jerome can decide.

An owlet hatches out onto Stormfast Island and into a world torn by war. For one hundred years, his people have fought off enemy owls from the Ice Talons, but the tide has turned. An invasion is coming, one the Kielian League won't have the strength to resist. Soon the tyrant owl Bylyric will rule over everything, and no honorable owl will be safe. Only the small owl from Stormfast stands between Bylyric and total victory. Lyze is not very impressive to look at, but he has a wild idea for a snake and owl strike unit that just might give the soldiers of the Kielian League the edge they need. This is his story, the story of an ordinary owl who rose to become Ezylryb of the Great Tree. This is the story of what it takes to make a Guardian of Ga'Hoole.
