This book was released on 2020-03-28 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wars of the 16th century were different from the isolated conflicts of the 15th century, spanning the continent and engaging many different parties at the same time. Emperors Maximilian I and Charles V were challenged on many fronts, externally by the Swiss, French, and Ottoman Turks, along with internal conflicts between the German princes and their people. It was a time of uprisings and invasions, of broken treaties and of instability, religious reformation and rebellions. Some of these conflicts were recorded in woodcut form, and published shortly after they happened. These woodcuts show the Landsknecht and their opponents in action, instead the more commonly seen individual depictions. The book contains scenes from the battles and sieges depicted in the German single sheet woodcuts: Pavia, Vienna, Budapest, and Münster… these along with many others, are all presented as a whole, then each individual plate, and pages of details, magnified for better viewing. There is also a brief description of the battle, and an explanation of the scenes in the woodcuts.

As in the first volume devoted to the collection (published in 1988 in English and Italian editions), the text is here organized first by national school, then alphabetically by artist, with individual works arranged chronologically. For each drawing, the authors provide a discussion of the work's style, dating, iconography, and relationship to other works, as well as provenance and a complete bibliography.

Book excerpt: Paintings by Renaissance masters Lucas Cranach the Elder, Albrecht Durer, and Hans Holbein the Younger are among the works featured in this lavish volume, the first to comprehensively study the largest collection of early German paintings in America. These works, created in the 14th through 16th centuries in the region that comprises present-day Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, include religious images - such as "Virgin and Child with Saint Anne" by Durer and the double-sided altarpiece "The Dormition of the Virgin" by Hans Schaufelein - as well as remarkable portraits by Holbein and the iconic "Judgment of Paris" by Cranach. In all, more than 70 works are thoroughly discussed and analyzed, making this volume an incomparable resource for the study of this rich artistic period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In print for the first time since 1883, this edition of Kriegsvolker is designed to allow easy access to 150 woodcuts depicting Landsknecht soldiers, officers and their ladies. Many of the woodcuts found in this edition are not available in other sources, including the German Single-leaf Woodcuts 1500-1550, and I am excited to put a copy of these woodcuts into your hands. Kriegsvolker contains three distinct books, each containing 50 woodcuts: Part I - Deutsche Kriegsleute von Nicolaus Meldemann und Hans Guldenmundt, 1530 Deutsche Kriegsleute was published by Nicolaus Meldemann and Hans Guldenmundt between 1520 and 1530 in Nuremberg. However, based on the clothing styles, the date is closer to 1530, after the Italian Wars and the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529. Part II - Landsknecht von David de Necker, 1560's While this book of 50 woodcuts was published in the 1560's by David de Necker (or Negkar), the woodcuts actually date from 1520-30. They were cut by his father, Jost de Negker from the artist's drawings. Part III Kreigsbuch des Grafen Reinhart zu Solms, 1559 Reinhart Graf zu Solms, 1491-1562, was a military theorist and Imperial field marshal during the Schmalkaldic War of 1546-47. Starting in the 1530's, he published several books on military theory, tactics and fortification design. These 50 woodcuts come from his Kreigsbuch, or War Book, published in 1559. The woodcuts are in two sections: III.1-III.23 are depictions of Landsknecht during the early part of Graf Reinhard's career as a knight. III.24-III.50 depict the soldiers and officers of the Imperial forces which fought in the Schmalkaldic War.

Book excerpt: In late medieval and early modern Europe, textual and visual records of disaster and mass death allow us to encounter the intense emotions generated through the religious, providential and apocalyptic frameworks that provided these events with meaning. This collection brings together historians, art historians, and literary specialists in a cross-disciplinary collection shaped by new developments in the history of emotions. It offers a rich range of analytical frameworks and case studies, from the emotional language of divine providence to individual and communal experiences of disaster. Geographically wide-ranging, the collection also analyses many different sorts of media: from letters and diaries to broadsheets and paintings. Through these and other historical records, the contributors examine how communities and individuals experienced, responded to, recorded and managed the emotional dynamics and trauma created by dramatic events like massacres, floods, fires, earthquakes and plagues.
