Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landmarks in English Industrial History History is opening out so vast a field that by common agreement we have come to recognize certain divisions in it. We speak of Ancient History and Modern History, Political History, Constitutional History, Ecclesiastical History, Mili tary History, Economic or Social History, and so on. But although these divisions are convenient, we must not draw a dividing line too rigidly; we cannot take each fact of history and label it as belonging to one subject or to another, however tempting this may be for the sake of clearness, because there are many events which are impor ant, not only in one, but in several branches of history With some this multiple importance is evident: no one would dream of assigning Magna Carta to the constitutional historian and forbidding the political historian to mention it; events like the Reformation, or the Model Parliament, or the coloniza tion of Ulster, or the Union with Scotland are plainly many sided. But there is another class of events which, though they appear to belong very definitely to one division of history, yet on a closer scrutiny reveal influences, at first. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to English Industrial History This book is an attempt to make a really interesting, simple and suggestive introduction to industrial and economic history. It is intended mainly to e our young men and women of all classes to take up earnestly the study of this important subject, which has hitherto been beyond the reach of most young people because the only available text-books have been either out-oi-date or far too learned and academic, as well as too expensive. The author's difficulty has been to know what to omit, but every effort has been made to include only the essential features and to present those in such a form as will tempt students to read the larger and more advanced books on the subject. A descriptive list of the most interesting books on the various portions of the subject will be found in the appendix. The sketch of a manor is, it is hoped, simple Without being misleading. The two population maps are intended to illustrate clearly the growth of population in the eighteenth century. Thanks are due to Mr. J. Munro, m.a. (beit Lecturer in Colonial History at the University of Oxford), and to my wife, to whom the author owes many suggestions and kind criticisms and to Messrs. A. L. Smith, m.a., and H. W. C. Davis, m.a. (both of Balliol College, Oxford), who have, by their teaching, made this book possible, but are, of course, not responsible for any of the statements made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industry in England: Historical Outlines IN 1890 the author published a small book, entitled The Industrial History of England, which met with a some what undeserved success, and has rapidly gone through several large editions. It was described in the first preface as an attempt to relate in a short, concise, and simple form the main outlines of England's economic and industrial history, meant to serve as an introduction to a fuller study of the subject, and as a preliminary sketch which the reader can afterwards, if he wishes, fill in for himself from larger volumes; and it seems to have attained its object of awakening popular interest, to some extent, in a very important branch of national history. But it had all the faults of a brief outline, and contained errors of fact and of expression which no one has regretted more sincerely than the author. It has therefore been my endeavour, in this larger work, to produce a History of Industry of a more satisfactory character, while at the same time retaining the essential features that characterised the earlier effort. As before, I have attempted, as far as possible, in the brief limits of a work like this, to connect economie and ind ustrial questions with social, political, and military movements, since only in some such mutual relation can historical events obtain their full significance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial History of the United States The industrial development of the United States has followed lines similar to those of European nations, - advancing slowly up to the end of the eighteenth century and after that gathering greater speed and momentum. Here, as in Europe, the growth has been accompanied by the use of machinery, by specialization, division of labor, concentration, growing complexity of organization, and, finally, by an increasing degree of public control. This text follows a topical rather than a chronological method of treatment. Nevertheless, allowing for an inevitable overlapping of events, it seems possible to distinguish four major periods of development, roughly divided as follows: (1) the colonial period of simple domestic economy and of dependence upon foreign trade, extending from the beginnings of permanent settlements to 1763; (2) the period of transition from colonial to national economic life, 1763 to about 1825; (3) the period of national consolidation and isolation, 1825 to 1860; and (4) a period of readjustment, marked by combination and organization growing out of severe competition, by public regulation of industry, and by all the new problems resulting from the closing of the frontier. The text emphasizes three principal ideas, foremost among which is the effect upon a people of centuries of a constantly moving frontier. It is difficult to estimate the influence of the fact that since the beginnings of American history every day has been "moving day" for large numbers of the people. They went into the West, crude, untamed, unshackled by tradition, out of touch with the old home culture, and often out of the reach of regularly established law.
