Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour market flexibility is one of the most closely debated public policy issues in India. This book provides a theoretical framework to understand the subject, and empirically examines to what extent India’s ‘jobless growth’ may be attributed to labour laws. There is a pervasive view that the country’s low manufacturing base and inability to generate jobs is primarily due to rigid labour laws. Therefore, job creation is sought to be boosted by reforming labour laws. However, the book argues that if labour laws are made flexible, then there are adverse consequences for workers: dismantled job security weakens workers’ bargaining power, incapacitates trade union movement, skews class distribution of output, dilutes workers’ rights, and renders them vulnerable. The book: identifies and critically examines the theory underlying the labour market flexibility (LMF) argument employs innovative empirical methods to test the LMF argument offers an overview of the organised labour market in India comprehensively discusses the proposed/instituted labour law reforms in the country contextualises the LMF argument in a macroeconomic setting discusses the political economy of labour law reforms in India. This book will interest scholars and researchers in economics, development studies, and public policy as well as economists, policymakers, and teachers of human resource management.

Book excerpt: Labor and Employment Law in the United States is a unique and important treatise that in a single, concise text covers all aspects of the law of work both in organized and unorganized workplaces. it surveys the full range of legal principles and statutory and administrative structures and procedures that govern employment relations. Additionally, it provides essential background information that places the law in context with the economic, political and social forces which shape its development. Labor and Employment Law in the United States is a complete revision of Professor Goldman's earlier treatise Labor Law and Industrial Relations in the U.S.A. . The title change reflects the impact of developments in the law of the workplace during the past decade and a half, with the resulting expansion of the treatise's coverage of the law and individual employment contracts, As well as examination of new federal legislation such as the American with Disabilities Act, The Family and Medical Leave Act And The Plant Closing Act (WARN). Labor and Employment Law in the United States will serve equally well as a desk reference for lawyers and labor relations specialists and as a text for courses in industrial relations, human resources and training programs. This treatise was originally published as part of the International Encyclopaedia for Labour Law and Industrial Relations .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native American peoples suffer from health, educational, infrastructure, and social deficiencies of the sort that most Americans who live outside tribal lands are wholly unaware of and would not tolerate. Indians are the poorest people in the United States, and their reservations are appallingly poverty-stricken; not surprisingly, they suffer from the numerous social pathologies that invariably accompany such economic conditions. Historically, most tribal communities were prosperous, composed of healthy, vibrant societies sustained over hundreds and in some instances perhaps even thousands of years. By creating sustainable economic development on reservations, however, gradual long-term change can be effected, thereby improving the standard of living and sustaining tribal cultures. Reservation “Capitalism” relates the true history, describes present-day circumstances, and sketches the potential future of Indian communities and economics. It provides key background information on indigenous economic systems and property-rights regimes in what is now the United States and explains how the vast majority of Native lands and natural resource assets were lost. Robert J. Miller focuses on strategies for establishing public and private economic activities on reservations and for creating economies in which reservation inhabitants can be employed, live, and have access to the necessities of life, circumstances ultimately promoting complete tribal self-sufficiency.
