Book excerpt: "This book does not argue for stronger security ties among the three countries based solely on a shared understanding of the threats posed by North Korea. Nor does it look toward containment of a rising China or resurgent Russia for its strategic rationale. Rather, the authors argue for broadening the foundation on which the three nations' ties rest. A better understanding of the complex weave of interests and values that binds the United States, South Korea, and Japan will stabilize the relationships and make them more resilient and adaptable to future developments."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Task Force report comprehensively reviews the situation on the peninsula as well as the options for U.S. policy. It provides a valuable ranking of U.S. interests, and calls for a firm commitment from the Obama administration to seek denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, backed by a combination of sanctions, incentives, and sustained political pressure, in addition to increased efforts to contain proliferation. It notes that China's participation in this effort is vital. Indeed, the report makes clear that any hope of North Korea's dismantling its nuclear program rests on China's willingness to take a strong stance. For denuclearization to proceed, China must acknowledge that the long-term hazard of a nuclear Korea is more perilous to it and the region than the short-term risk of instability. The report also recognizes that robust relations between Washington and its allies in the region, Japan and South Korea, must underpin any efforts to deal with the North Korean problem. It looks as well at regime change and scenarios that could lead to reunification of the peninsula. At the same time that the Task Force emphasizes the danger and urgency of North Korea's behavior, it recognizes and applauds the beneficial U.S. relationship with South Korea, which has proved to be a valuable economic and strategic partner. In this vein, the Task Force advocates continued close coordination with Seoul and urges prompt congressional passage of the U.S.-South Korea free trade agreement.

Book excerpt: Understanding the Korean Peninsula in the 21st Century: Political, Economic, and Security Issues in the Asia/Pacific Region is part 2 of a three-part curriculum series. Parts 1 and 3 focus on U.S. and Japanese relations with China and Vietnam, respectively. This curriculum series introduces students to policy options for the United States and Japan in various Asian countries at the turn of the century as the "Pacific Age." The rapid growth and the accompanying changes unfolding in Asia merit thoughtful attention. The Asian Wall Street Journal Weekly has recently noted that by the year 2000, Asian economies will exceed those of Canada, the United States, and Mexico combined. Understanding the Korean Peninsula in the 21st Century: Political, Economic, and Security Issues in the Asia/Pacific Region seeks to introduce students to challenges and opportunities presented by policy options for U.S. and Japanese relations with the Korean Peninsula at the turn of the century. By identifying and examining these options, students will gain an awareness of U.S., Japanese, and Korean perspectives on political, economic, and security issues. -- Introduction page 1 and 2.
