The songs and rhymes of children most of all! In Kid Songs Around The World we've gathered 100 of our favorites from all the continents of the globe. We start in Africa, with welcome songs, circle dances and call-and-response tunes. Then, we move on to Asia, with songs of friendship, love and play. Then Australia and the islands of Oceania, where you can learn songs about the sea. The songs from Europe include well-known characters like the Sandman and Little Red Ridinghood. From North America you can find an Iroquois lullaby and both English and French Canadian songs. We end with South America where the music is tinged with African and Spanish influences. Each song includes the full text in the original language, with an English translation, and most include sheet music. All include links to web pages where you can listen to recordings, hear the tune or watch a YouTube performance. Each includes a beautiful illustration. Many have commentary sent to us by our correspondents who write about the history of the songs and what they meant in their lives. Kid Songs Around The World is produced by Mama Lisa's World, where we believe sharing our cultures will help bring the world closer together. At Mama Lisa's World we work with ordinary people around the globe to build a platform to preserve and exchange traditional culture. We hope this book will help foster a love of international children's songs! * 100 Children's songs and rhymes from around the world * Full text of each in the original language * English translations * Most with sheet music * Links to web pages with recordings, many by ordinary people who have contributed them * Commentary from our correspondents about what the songs and rhymes have meant to their lives * Illustrations You'll find 100 Kid Songs and Rhymes from around the world, including: * Do do ki do (Fried Ripe Plantains), from Cameroon * Anile Anile Vaa Vaa Vaa(Chipmunk Chipmunk, Come Come Come), from India * Te aroha (Love), from New Zealand * Au clair de la lune (Under the Moonlight), from France * La Cucaracha (The Cockroach), from Mexico * Ciranda, Cirandinha (Circle, Little Circle), from Brazil * Fanga Alafia (Hello, Welcome), from Nigeria * Bangau Oh Bangau (Stork, Oh Stork), from Malaysia And many more!

Book excerpt: This book offers a fresh and diverse perspective on home musical activities of young children from a variety of countries, including; Brazil, Denmark, Greece, Israel, Kenya, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, South Africa,Taiwan, the UK, and the United States. Narrowing their study to seven-year-olds from middle-class families, the articles in this volume argue that home musical experiences provide new and important windows into musical childhoods as they relate to issues of identity, family life, gender, culture, social class and schooling. Though childhood musical engagement differs considerably, it has direct implications for a better understanding of music education and childhood development. Using a wiki to share data and research across time and space, this volume is a model for collaborative cross-cultural research and is centered on the home as a primary research site for children's musical engagement.

Book excerpt: Introduction: A World of Children's Songs does not presume to be a definitive collection of songs from every country, although it does contain material from the seven major geographical-cultural regions into which it has somewhat arbitrarily divided the globe. One of its goals is to give children musical windows through which they can see into cultures different from their won. The examples included here, taken as a whole, can tell us much about the world of children wherever they may be. These songs are loved and sung by children because they are about the powerful stuff of life-family, work and celebration, sadness and happiness. The imaginative and adventurous leader or teacher can make use of this musical mortar to cement facts together to add texture and color to a child's understanding of life. A second, equally important goal of this book is to provide a musical resource that will help teachers, leaders, and parents introduce children to languages other than English. For many American adults, just the sight of a foreign word on the printed page is enough to discourage the use of a song, no matter how good the tune. Afraid of mispronouncing the words or of sounding pretentious if we do say them correctly, we stick to English. Consequently, the extent of most American children's repertoire of songs in another language is limited to "Frere Jacques"; adults don't fell self-conscious singing or teaching those French words because we learned them as children. I believe the time has come to move beyond "Frere Jacques" because the simple truth is that children will tackle any language as long as someone takes the time to teach them. The third goal for A World of Children's Songs is to offer songs that are easy to learn and fun to sing. Whether or not one chooses to use them as resource material or teaching tools, the songs in this collection are enjoyable bits of the world's culture that need to be shared with each new generation.

When is the right time to start lessons? Which instrument is the best fit? Why is practice so challenging and what can parents do to keep kids musically motivated? Where can a parent learn about music programs, camps, books, recordings, and other important resources? This groundbreaking book answers these questions and many others, serving up healthy portions of insight, humor, research, practical advice, fresh ideas and heartfelt encouragement for making the most of musical development from pregnancy through the elementary years. It provides everything parents need to nurture children so they may begin to discover their own unique voices. If one book can keep kids from quitting, this is it! "This book will help you find a new relationship with your child, and perhaps, yourself ... It's never too late." Graham Nash
