They have gained extraordinary abilities bestowed on them by a friendly Keltian alien. They soon encounter unexpected challenges with a new member to their group, or an adult who wants to assume control. They discover this comes with mixed blessings, adding additional threats while improving their chance of survival. During one of their excursions, they encounter a half human/half alien hybrid, which leads to the discovery of an unknown scientific military bunker. As the hybrid and survivors create an alliance, the question becomes: “Is this hybrid the answer to wiping out the Reficulians once and for all?” What powers and abilities does the hybrid have that will improve their odds against the Reficulians? What transformation takes place in the hybrid cementing his relationship with the survivors?

With the ship completely repaired, they seek a new sanctuary where the Reficulians have difficulties tolerating the temperature extremes. Derrick's dreams with the Keltians become more frequent as the group struggles to understand how they alone can drive the Reficulians from Earth. Their abilities have enabled them to help other survivors, yet the "fight," the "war" on the Reficulians, has hardly begun. They quickly realize that in other parts of the world, complete eradication of cities has begun. It's only a matter of time before the Reficulians discover where they are hiding.

But that normal day ended with an apocalyptic invasion by the alien Reficulians. Eleven-year-old Derrick, the main character and narrator, survived the first day through a fluke in alien technology. Not knowing if it was just Winterset that was attacked or the whole world, he eventually finds others. One by one the young survivors come together in a fight for survival. They soon meet up with another alien who is a Keltian and is on their side. Unable to defeat the Reficulians on their own, Earth’s survivors recruit a small band of kids and give each of them special abilities, not knowing if this will be enough to help them save the planet. The young people face challenges, encounter more survivors, and through trial and error learn to use their abilities to fight the Reficulians. Will their power be enough to conquer the alien species that has already obliterated other worlds? Can these kids outwit and outmaneuver a superior race to save planet Earth?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brilliant horsemen and great fighters, the Scythians were nomadic horsemen who ranged wide across the grasslands of the Asian steppe from the Altai mountains in the east to the Great Hungarian Plain in the first millennium BC. Their steppe homeland bordered on a number of sedentary states to the south - the Chinese, the Persians and the Greeks - and there were, inevitably, numerous interactions between the nomads and their neighbours. The Scythians fought the Persians on a number of occasions, in one battle killing their king and on another occasion driving the invading army of Darius the Great from the steppe. Relations with the Greeks around the shores of the Black Sea were rather different - both communities benefiting from trading with each other. This led to the development of a brilliant art style, often depicting scenes from Scythian mythology and everyday life. It is from the writings of Greeks like the historian Herodotus that we learn of Scythian life: their beliefs, their burial practices, their love of fighting, and their ambivalent attitudes to gender. It is a world that is also brilliantly illuminated by the rich material culture recovered from Scythian burials, from the graves of kings on the Pontic steppe, with their elaborate gold work and vividly coloured fabrics, to the frozen tombs of the Altai mountains, where all the organic material - wooden carvings, carpets, saddles and even tattooed human bodies - is amazingly well preserved. Barry Cunliffe here marshals this vast array of evidence - both archaeological and textual - in a masterful reconstruction of the lost world of the Scythians, allowing them to emerge in all their considerable vigour and splendour for the first time in over two millennia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 3rd to the 6th centuries saw the collapse of the classical Mediterranean civilization and the emergence of new states in western Europe based on the Germanic warrior society. This book focuses particularly on the men who made up the retinues of the Germanic warlords who carved kingdoms out of the carcass of the West Roman Empire. Although sources are scarce, Simon MacDowall constructs a convincing picture, using evidence from Roman historians, German archaeology and Anglo-Saxon poetry. The warriors' society, hierarchy, training, equipment, appearance, tactics and style of fighting are all examined, building a comprehensive portrait of the Germanic warrior in this period.

Book excerpt: Galloglass, from the Gaelic gall_glaigh for 'young foreign warriors', were mercenaries from the Western Isles of Scotland who fought in the retinues of Irish magnates from the mid-13th century until the early 17th century. Without question, galloglass are among the most visually impressive warriors of all time: they were sketched by Albrecht D_rer, were mentioned by Shakespeare, and were discussed with awe and amazement in the correspondence of all the leading Elizabethan soldiers who served in Ireland. Thousands fought in Ireland, and yet so far there has been only one detailed account of the galloglass, and this work concentrates on the clan and family structures of the galloglass, and not their experience as warriors. This book provides the first detailed military history of these fearsome warriors.

Book excerpt: Warriors - evolved from the earliest hunter classes, they have become specialists in the art of enforcing social order through violence and projecting power at all levels of society's hierarchies from the dawn of time. Often associated with the most prestigious classes of human society, they have manifested the political will of chieftains, lords, kings and emperors through the whole of human history. Tasked with accomplishing brutal acts, incredible feats of self-sacrifice as well as heroic deeds, they were often richly rewarded or were just as easily forgotten. On any battlefield, valour and glory can be found as easily as death and the warrior elite have always been there - fighting for their cause, their leader or their people. They have been both the attackers and the defenders, both the regime and the rebels, the invader and the invaded - and they have always been with us. Join the author as he goes on a journey of discovery to explore some of the greatest fighting names of ancient history from around the globe, exploring how they lived, died and how they found everlasting fame as History's Greatest Warriors.
