Book excerpt: Why LGBTQ adults don’t end troubled ties with parents and why (perhaps) they should Families We Keep is a surprising look at the life-long bonds between LGBTQ adults and their parents. Alongside the importance of “chosen families” in the queer community, Rin Reczek and Emma Bosley-Smith found that very few LGBTQ people choose to become estranged from their parents, even if those parent refuse to support their gender identity, sexuality, or both. Drawing on interviews with over seventy-five LGBTQ people and their parents, Reczek and Bosley-Smith explore the powerful ties that bind families together, for better or worse. They show us why many feel obliged to maintain even troubled—and sometimes outright toxic—relationships with their parents. They argue that this relationship persists because what we think of as the “natural” and inevitable connection between parents and adult children is actually created and sustained by the sociocultural power of compulsory kinship. After revealing what holds even the most troubled intergenerational ties together, Families We Keep gives us permission to break free of those family bonds that are not in our best interests. Reczek and Bosley-Smith challenge our deep-rooted conviction that family—and specifically, our relationships with our parents—should be maintained at any cost. Families We Keep shines a light on the shifting importance of family in America, and how LGBTQ people navigate its complexities as adults.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience gripping wartime stories and honest prayers by this Camp David chaplain now serving in Iraq. When words mean less and less, but money talks more and more; when blasphemy is a best seller, and eternal war has replaced hopeful diplomacy; in times like these is prayer even possible? Patrick J. McLaughlin thinks so. McLaughlin is an active duty Navy Chaplain who has ministered to heads of state and to soldiers living and dying in the heat of Iraq. No Atheists in Foxholes assembles Chaplain McLaughlin's experiences and prayers from e-mails, private notes, and personal conversations that take us real-time into realms of duty and spirit: from the quiet darkness of his infant son's New England bedroom on September 11, 2001, to the bomshelled medical tents and blistered Army Humvees of Anbar Province. Chaplain McLaughlin believes that prayer is not only possible, but critical. "We must all learn to pray for peace," he says, "and then become an answer to that prayer."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Emmanuel and Angel are U.S. citizens, living in Kent and Seattle respectively. Emmanuel's mother died recently, leaving him in the care of his grandmother and sisters. No one else in Emmanuel's family has documents. ICE detained and deported Angel's father last year. Now his mother works a second job to cover the family's expenses, and Angel often cares for his three younger siblings all day and well into the night. Emmanuel and Angel are not alone: over 108,000 children-all U.S. citizens-faced the terror of seeing a parent deported between 1998 and 2007. The stories presented in this collection all speak of this fear and the dire need for comprehensive, humane, and fair immigration reform now.Across the nation, the Department of Homeland Security reports an estimated 3.1 million U.S. citizen children who have at least one undocumented parent. Many more have a parent with legal status who may be deported for legal infractions as minor as multiple traffic violations. This means that each year, thousands of families face the unthinkable-the forced and unnecessary separation of parents from their children. As the debate about immigration reform heats up in Washington, D.C., members of Washington Community Action Network have gathered the stories of dozens of children in Washington state. The narratives tell of unthinkable separation, the dread of detention and deportation, and, above all, the importance of keeping families together.Twenty-five children share their private stories in this book. These children share a dream: that our members of Congress and the President of the United States will listen, learn and enact legislation to keep families together. The children's request is simple: support comprehensive immigration reform this year. Act on behalf of Washington's children and families. Reform our broken immigration system. Keep families together.

In Living Simply , I ponder what it takes to slow down and downsize while living in a culture that supersizes everything from french fries to SUVs. Choosing this isn’t about turning my back on the world or lowering my expectations, but about making wise choices and finding the abundant life promised by Jesus.”
