Book excerpt: The autobiography of football icon Jimmy Greaves James Peter 'Jimmy' Greaves was one of the greatest footballers to have graced the English game, a goalscorer of legendary prowess. His gripping and characteristically humorous autobiography journeys from Jimmy's childhood in the East End, via his early career at Chelsea and his short and troubled stay at A.C. Milan, to his emergence as one of the great stars of sixties football while at Spurs and an outstanding England forward. Jimmy's record as a striker is extraordinary - he was the leading goalscorer in the First Division (now Premier League) for six seasons and during his playing career was never out of the top five. There are darker aspects too: the bitter disappointment of failing to make the World Cup-winning team of 1966, and the battle against the alcoholism that followed his retirement from the game. This book is both Jimmy's story and the story of football in the golden era of the fifties and sixties before money changed the game. It is populated by the great players whom Jimmy played with and against and animated by wonderful anecdotes about the game. It is an account of how football was then and how it has changed.

Book excerpt: James 'Jimmy' Peter Greaves MBE, born on 20th February 1940, in Manor Park, east London, England, UK then brought up in Hainault, Essex was a professional footballer who played as a forward. He's England's 4th-highest international goalscorer with 44, including a record 6 hat-tricks, Tottenham Hotspur's highest scorer with 266, and the highest scorer in the history of English top-flight football with 357 goals. He finished as the 1st Division's top scorer in 6 seasons, being inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame. Jimmy began his professional career at Chelsea during 1957 then played in the following year's FA Youth Cup final. He scored 124 First Division goals in just 4 seasons before transferring to A.C. Milan for £80,000 in April 1961. His time in Italy wasn't happy, so he returned to England with Tottenham Hotspur for £99,999 in December 1961. Whilst playing for Spurs he won the FA Cup during 1961-62 then 1966-67, the Charity Shield in 1962 & 1967, plus the European Cup Winners' Cup during 1962-63, the year that Greaves came closest to winning a league title, as Tottenham were runners-up. He moved to West Ham Utd in a player-exchange in March 1970 then retired the following year. After 4-years away from the sport he returned to football at the non-league level, despite his alcoholism. During a 5-year spell he played for Brentwood, Chelmsford City, Barnet, and Woodford Town before permanently retiring from the game during 1980. Jimmy scored 13 goals in 12 England under-23 internationals followed by 44 goals during 57 full England internationals from 1959 - 1967. He played in the 1962 & 1966 FIFA World Cup finals, but was injured in the group stage of the 1966 World Cup, losing his 1st team place to Geoff Hurst, who kept Greaves out of the first team in the final. Although England lifted the World Cup, Jimmy wasn't given a winners medal until a change of FIFA rules during 2009. He was also part of the squad that came 3rd in UEFA Euro 1968, although he didn't play in the finals.

Book excerpt: Malcolm Allison is one of the most controversial figures of the last half-century of English football. Leader of the famed 'West Ham Academy', his playing career was cut short by the loss of a lung to tuberculosis. Disillusioned, he became a professional gambler before acknowledging that football was his calling. After humble beginnings as a coach, he began a celebrated partnership with Joe Mercer, turning Manchester City into one of the most stylish teams English football has produced. Along with the trophies came the birth of Big Mal, the larger-than-life personality who helped revolutionise televised football. He became instantly recognisable for his cigar and Fedora, and equally notorious for a string of affairs with beautiful women. As the dark side of Big Mal took over, he was banned for life from the touchlines, became embroiled in a series of boardroom battles and spent time in police cells and rehabilitation clinics fighting the effects of alcoholism. Yet despite the often-destructive effect of his Big Mal persona, Malcolm Allison retains his status as one of the most incisive minds to have graced the game. This book tells both sides of the story, tracing the life and times of one of the most charismatic characters in British sport.

Now Greavsie reveals the footballers and managers who have given him most entertainment and are his biggest heroes. Greavsie has confined his star-studded assembly to players and managers of his lifetime -- dipping fondly back into the days of Stanley Matthews, Tom Finney and Len Shackleton and coming up to date with in-depth analysis of modern masters like Thierry Henry, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney. Along the way he nods in the direction of his good pals Bobby Moore, Dave Mackay, Billy Wright and, of course, George Best. Footballing gods of the calibre of Pele, di Stefano, Puskas and Maradona naturally win a place in the personal Greaves Hall of Fame. You may not agree with all his selections, but if you are a true football fan you will agree that this is a book that makes you laugh and grips your attention as you take a look at some of FOOTBALL's GREAT HEROES AND ENTERTAINERS.
