Book excerpt: Looking back from the perspective of 2014, it is easy to dismiss Jessie Pope's versified jingoism as a glib call to patriotism and as a facile celebration of the stereotypical British character: brave, stoical and essentially benevolent – reluctantly going to war to teach Germany a lesson. However, insofar as they capture the public mood at the start of the First World War – a mood they helped to create, of course – they are valuable documents. Her derogatory comments against Germany and Germans in general were part and parcel of the propaganda of the day – produced in great quantities by the popular press. Similarly, her assumptions about the inherent superiority of the British race – while ridiculous – have to be seen in the context of Great Britain's Empire, the largest the world has ever seen. Moreover, reading Jessie Pope's poems provides us with a context in which to read the poetry of Owen, Sassoon and Rosenberg. Indeed, an early draft of Owen's “Dulce et Decorum Est” was subtitled (in Owen's own handwriting) “To a Certain Poetess”: there is a consensus that Owen is referring to Jessie Pope. When we read Pope's poems, we can understand the vehemence of the later war poetry, as it is partly a reaction against early propaganda verse like this.

Book excerpt: Jessie Pope was born in Leicester on March 18th 1868. Educated at North London Collegiate School and in her career became a regular contributor to Punch, The Daily Mail and The Daily Express, also writing for Vanity Fair, Pall Mall Magazine and the Windsor. Jessie wrote extensively for children and had her verse published in Pope also wrote verse for many illustrated collections for children, including The Little Soldier Book (1907), Babes and Birds (1910), Babes and Beasts (1912), The Adventures of Silversuit (1912), Three Jolly Anglers (1913), Tom, Dick and Harry: their Deeds and Misdeeds (1914), and Frolicsome Friends (1915). Her adult poetry is essentially patriotic and misses much of the carnage and brutality so powerfully portrayed by the War Poets. She was extensively published by The Daily Mail in order to encourage enlistment among young men. Her simple rhymes and jingoistic stance encouraged many to sign up and fight for the Allies. During the war she published three volumes of verse; Jessie Pope's War Poems (1915), More War Poems (1915) and Simple Rhymes for Stirring Times (1916). After the war, Pope continued to write poems, a novel and children's books. She married at age 61 in 1929 and moved from London to Fritton, near Great Yarmouth. Jessie Pope died on December, 14, 1941 in Devon."

Thou wilt hear the far roll of the cannon, Thou wilt see the dim smoke and the stain, Thou wilt gird up thy star-robes about thee, And turn to thy traffic again. My country! My country! My country! They lie that will say of thee so! The stars that have led thee shall lead thee The hours of His Judgment they know! Thy feet will be swift on His pathway, Though the grapes of His wrath Should be red; Thou wilt leap to His trumpet, my country, With the might of thy quick and thy dead! My country! My country! My country! There is never a leaf that will fade, There is never a flower that will wither, In the garland thy fingers will braid! Their praise will be blown from the mountain, Their song will be sung by the sea! Immortal, immortal, my country, The sons that shall perish for thee!
