Book excerpt: By 1875, the institution of slavery in East Africa was winding down, after a series of treaties with the Sultan of Zanzibar and in some cases, the forcible seizing by the British navy of slave cargo on the high seas. With the cooperation of the Sultan, a colony was set up by the Anglican church on the coast of Kenya where former slaves (who were in many cases still being pursued by their former masters) were given safety, a plot of land, religious instruction and education. The Freretown project, which included a hospital which serviced Muslims as well as Christians, was a noble experiment and success despite corruption by some of the clergy and the importation of vices from the nearby community into Freretown. James Hannington, the first Anglican Bishop of East Africa, was an idealist who envisioned a native clergy as leaders over the religious community. An impetuous man, he struck out on an overland expedition to Uganda where he and many of his followers were slaughtered at the orders of the 18 year old Kibaka of Uganda who thought the missionaries were trying to invade his country. William Jones, who led survivors of the massacre back to the coast, became a strong leader of the native community and was ordained a priest along with several other natives, but as the 19th century drew to an end many of the African clergy chose to resign in the face of the discrimination and lack of sympathy of the white clergy. It was a time of dreaming, a dream which for a time seemed real, of a society where many Muslims saw a mutual benefit in welcoming Christians to their community, and white clergy saw their role only as training the Africans and then letting them take over.

On 1 March 1874 he was ordained as a deacon, and took charge of the small parish of Trentishoe in Devon. He offered himself to the Church Missionary Society and in June 1884, he was ordained bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa, and in January 1885, Hannington departed for Africa. After arriving at Freretown, near Mombasa, Kenya, he decided to focus on opening a new route to Uganda: together with his team, he safely reached a spot near Victoria Nyanza on 21 October, but his arrival had not gone unnoticed, and under the orders of King Mwanga II of Buganda, the missionaries were imprisoned in Busoga by Basoga chiefs. After eight days of captivity, by order from King Mwanga II, Hannington's men were killed, and on 29 October 1885, Hannington himself was stabbed in both sides. Joseph Mukasa, a Roman Catholic priest and an official at Mwanga's court, rebuked the king for the deed, and was beheaded for it. Hannington and his companions were among the first Martyrs of Uganda.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from James Hannington, First Bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa: A History of His Life and Work, 1847-1885 No apology is surely needed for writing the life of James Hannington. If it be true that every life which has been lived conveys to the world some message which should not be lost, much less can we afford to lose the record of a life like his - a devoted life crowned by a heroic death. With regard, however, to my own part in connection with this work, a word or two of explanation may be necessary. It seemed to his relatives and friends to be especially desirable that his Memoir should be entrusted to one who had known him personally and intimately. Without this knowledge, his biographer must have failed in presenting him in any recognizable form before the public eye. A mere enumeration of his acts, such as might be easily culled from his diaries, letters, and published articles, or from printed notices regarding him, would convey scarcely any idea at all of the man himself. A verbatim record of his sayings would probably produce an impression utterly false, except to those who knew the speaker and understood the moods in which he uttered them. The materials of which Bishop Hannington was formed were not run into the mould in which ordinary men are shaped. In few things was he just like the majority. Almost everything he said or did was stamped with the impress of his own distinct individuality. That individuality his friends now treasure among their most precious memories. They can never dissociate his words from the tone of the voice which accompanied them, or from the sly twinkle, or it might be, the impatient flash of the grey eyes which introduced them. They can never think of his acts without recalling the active, energetic figure, so full of life and movement, which carried through with an inimitable enthusiasm of forceful purpose whatever was uppermost in his mind.
