Book excerpt: Prose fiction, although not always associated with classical antiquity, flourished in the early Roman Empire, not only in realistic Latin novels but also and indeed principally in the Greek ideal romance of love and adventure. Enormously popular in the Renaissance, these stories have been less familiar in later centuries. Translations of the Greek stories were not readily available in English before B.P. Reardon’s first appeared in 1989.Nine complete stories are included here as well as ten others, encompassing the whole range of classical themes: romance, travel, adventure, historical fiction, and comic parody. A foreword by J.R. Morgan examines the enormous impact this groundbreaking collection has had on our understanding of classical thought and our concept of the novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henosis is the Greek word for oneness/unity. Since time immemorial this universal concept has been championed within traditional wisdom, ancient philosophy and theology. The psychoanalyst, Carl Jung referred our shared human experience with the phrase “collective unconscious,” while physicists use the term “quantum entanglement” to describe how every particle is inherently connected to the whole. The missing links between the wisdom of ancient philosophy and the startling insights within modern psychology to transform suffering, transcend circumstances, and increase our capacity for love are explored in The Promise of Wholeness. Most philosophical studies of ancient wisdom lack practical applications, and many popular psychology books simply skim the surface of the human experience. Licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist Eric Ehrke offers a new foundation for profound living based on classical teachings and enriched by modern scientific/psychological breakthroughs. The principles and values it takes to be happy and whole endure, but gentle makeovers are needed to modernize the message. Clinical examples from Eric Ehrke’s forty years of psychotherapy practice and personal stories from courageous individuals are included throughout the book. Emphasizing innovative teachings, and new critical exercises for infantile, childish, and adolescent stress responses, Ehrke offers powerful meditations and invaluable tools for bringing these concepts and strategies into everyday life. Here, eternal wisdom, sound psychological principles, and practical solutions come together in this handbook of consciousness; a truly helpful guide for anyone seeking lasting peace and well-being.

Book excerpt: Human life. We marvel at its complexity, we wonder at its fragility, and as Catholics we embrace its dignity. But as far back as 1880, the Church has faced the reality that our culture often stands in opposition to God’s loving design for life, love, marriage, and family. In Life and Love: Opening Your Heart to God’s Design, Terry Polakovic takes us on a fascinating tour of eight Church documents, spanning nearly 140 years, that pertain to human life and love: Arcanum Divinae (On Christian Marriage), by Pope Leo XIII, 1880 Casti Connubii (Of Chaste Wedlock), by Pope Pius XI, 1930 Humanae Vitae (Of Human Life), by Pope Paul VI, 1968 Familiaris Consortio (On the Role of the Christian Family in the Modern World), by Pope John Paul II, 1981 Mulieris Dignitatem (On the Dignity and Vocation of Women), by John Paul II, 1988 Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), by John Paul II, 1995 Deus Caritas Est (God Is Love), by Pope Benedict XVI, 2005 Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love), by Pope Francis, 2016 Whether you’ve read these documents before or are discovering them for the first time, Life and Love will help you understand how the Church consistently and fearlessly offers the only true response to the battles of our time. Book excerpt: The oldest European novels were written in ancient Greek during the first few centuries of the Common Era. Despite the gold rush towards these novels in the last two decades and the resurgence of interest in representations of character in literary studies, and Classical studies in particular, no volume has yet been devoted to exploring character and characterization in the ancient Greek novels. This study analyses the characterization of the protagonists in the five extant, so-called 'ideal' Greek novels (those of Chariton, Xenophon of Ephesus, Achilles Tatius, Longus, and Heliodorus). De Temmerman offers close readings of techniques of characterization used in each novel and combines modern—mainly, but not exclusively, structuralist—narratology and ancient rhetoric. He argues that three conceptual couples central to ancient theory of character, typification/individuation, idealistic/realistic characterization, and static/dynamic character, construct character in these narratives more ambiguously, more elusively, and in more complex ways than has so far been realized. Throughout the different chapters, it also becomes clear how intimately presentations of character are intertwined with self-portrayal and performance of the self.
