Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland Its Saints and Scholars This book is an attempt to give within a small compass a concise survey of the most glorious epoch in the annals of our country. The subject is a vast and an extremely important one. A great deal of study and research has been given to it by learned and devoted workers, and a great amount of literary and archaeological research still remains to be done before we can assure ourselves that we have gained a really comprehensive view of Early Christian Ireland. The size of this volume will not therefore be taken as the authors measure of the importance of a period of history of surpassing human interest, and the book itself is only intended as an introduction to the study of larger and more ambitious treatises covering the same ground. No useful purpose could be served by overloading with references a book of this kind which is intended for popular use. Book excerpt: Though the description Insula Sanctorum et Doctorum was not actually written down until the sixteenth century, Ireland's fame as the island of saints and scholars had then been established for more than six hundred years. That reputation was won mainly in what might otherwise have really been the Dark Ages. The Christian faith which had collapsed over most of Europe with the decline and fall of the western Roman empire still survived on the rocky fringes of the Atlantic seaboard. The 'pilgrims for Christ' as these Irish voyagers called themselves, spent the rest of their lives relighting a candle in the darkness and in spite of terrible deprivations, not least homesickness, re-establishing not only Christianity but the glories of classical learning which had fallen into their safe keeping. This book lists both saints and scholars (often in the same personality), their foundations and the works that made the period Ireland's truly golden age.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanctorum Et Doctorum: Or, Ireland's Ancient Schools and Scholars Perhaps the most striking feature in their character, speaking generally, was their extraordinary love of solitude and mortification. They loved learning much, it is true; but they loved God and nature more. They knew nothing of what is now called civilization, and were altogether ignorant of urban life; but still they had a very keen perception of the grandeur and beauty of Gods universe. The voice of the storm and the strength of the sea, the majesty of lofty mountains and the glory of summer woods, spoke to their hearts even more eloquently than the voice of the preacher, or the writing on their parchments. The author has sought throughout to put all the information, which he could collect in reference to his subject, in a popular and attractive form. At the same time he has spared no pains to consult all the available authorities both ancient and modern; and he has always gone to the original sources, whenever it was possible to do so. We do not pretend to have avoided all mistakes in matters of fact, nor to be quite free from errors in matters of opinion. But we can say that we have honestly done our best to make the study of this portion of our Celtic history interesting and profitable to the general reader. And there is no doubt that the study of the holy and self-denying lives of our ancient Saints and Scholars will exercise a purifying and elevating influence on the minds of all, but more especially of the young, will teach them to raise their thoughts to higher things, and set less store on the paltry surroundings of their daily life. With the single exception of Iona, which may be considered as an Irish island, we have spoken in this volume only of the Monastic Schools at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Saints of Erin: Legendary History of Ireland The study of Irish history finds more votaries now; the treasures long locked up in manuscript are now beginning to be presented to the reading public; but a prejudice due to the rationalistic spirit of the last century weighs on the early lives of the Irish saints. Most frequently they are spoken of only with contempt. Moore, in his History of Ireland, made a feeble vindication, sheltering his rashness under the names of a Gibbon and a Montesquieu the writer of the following pages has done more; he has drawn from them pictures full of interest and beauty. He views the whole legend as a Christian artist, not as an antiquarian or an historian. The credibility of accounts does not enter into his sphere; he takes up any that suits the woof of the tapestry which he weaves, and which we trust our readers will find as pleasing as we have, done. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Patrick, and the Early Church of Ireland Was there ever such a man as Saint Patrick? It was wise to consider this question before attempting to write his life. By some it has been doubted, by a few others denied. But in such cases there has usually been a strong party feeling, or an ignorance of certain original sources of history. There is a distinction to be made between the myth and the man. Imagination has given us a Robinson Crusoe; the real man was Alexander Selkirk. The Saint Patrick of the ordinary Irish heart is certainly very mythical. The portrait of him was drawn from imagination; the colours are not those of the fifth, but those of the twelfth or fourteenth century. The deeds are manufactured to order and by the job, and the life is made of the baldest legends. This Patrick is a fully-developed Papist of the time, when certain errors pre vailed, which he could not have known in the fifth century. He is constantly working miracles, some of them very trifling, and some of them astounding, beyond all that was ever recorded of a mere man. For his especial benefit divine revelations are made to him, which cause a greater amazement than any ever made to Moses or Paul. He is too wonderful to be real. The myth business was entirely overdone. The manufacturers did not perceive that com mon sense might some time be restored to the human race. In the Middle Ages it was customary with the monks to exercise their scholars in writing the lives of imaginary saints; asserting that it was a pious and very improving way of exercising the imagination! L The best of these fanciful biographies were laid aside for future use; and after the lapse of a few ages, when their statements could not be disproved, were produced and published as genuine.
