Book excerpt: A new paradigm is emerging in Western civilization, led by transpersonal psychology, chaos and complexity theories, general evolution theory, and the human potential movement. Leading developmental researchers are extending psychology upwards, linking it with mystical states to embrace spirituality. Coordinating fields of information both new and old, integral theorists are creating a truly holistic approach to the many ways of knowing that are part of the human experience. Astrology should have its place among these disciplines: through the Dark Age when materialism reigned in Western culture astrology held aloft a light, reminding us that we do not live in a meaningless, mechanistic universe but within a meaningful, conscious cosmos. Yet for astrology to be fully recognized, astrologers need to have understanding about their field: where it has been, where it is, and where we might take it. In Integral Astrology, Armand M. Diaz, Ph.D., offers an exciting new way for astrologers to approach their ancient and diverse discipline. He emphasizes that there is not one astrology, but a number of astrologies, each of which expresses a particular place on the cultural landscape, an inner or outer orientation, and a stage of consciousness evolution. He shows how these diverse perspectives create a dynamic mosaic of astrological knowledge, and presents a model for a truly inclusive, integral astrology that honors both its traditions and innovations while also building bridges to other disciplines and ways of thinking.

This particular text deals with the encoding of information both astrologically and generally that interferes with and colors our critical thinking skills and ability for accurate foresight. Although myths are used to convey concepts, the running theme in all works is that neither astrology nor myths “cause” anything, and that each person’s reality is the result of free will effort and choices at every given moment. They do however; reflect engrained archetypal belief structures passed down over millennia. Those belief structures do affect reality. Logical rules will be increased in this volume and fallacious thinking illuminated not only in traditional astrological principles, but in widely accepted social attitudes.

Book excerpt: An exploration into how to use archetypal astrology as a guide to the transpersonal journey. The exploration of the psyche in non-ordinary states of consciousness provides access to powerful transformative experiences that can lead us towards a more complete experience of being human (the realisation of a deeper identity) while also yielding extraordinary insights into the ultimate nature of reality. Described by Stanislav Grof as “the Rosetta Stone of consciousness research,” archetypal astrology is based on a correspondence between planetary alignments and archetypal patterns in human experience. Here, by drawing on the work of Grof and Richard Tarnas, Butler systematically describes the archetypal themes and qualities associated with each of the major planetary combinations studied in astrology and considers how these themes might manifest and be supported in deep psychological self-exploration. Based on thirty years of research, Pathways to Wholeness is an indispensable reference book for explorers of the inner worlds. Pathways to Wholeness: - Explores the intersection between Grofian transpersonal psychology and archetypal astrology - Describes the nature of the planetary archetypes in astrology - Explores the archetypal meaning of all the main planetary combinations as applied to everyday life, perinatal psychology, and transpersonal experience - Provides illuminating case studies and vignettes - Illustrated with mandala drawings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2016 Roland H. Bainton Book Prize of the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference During the sixteenth century, no part of the Christian West saw the development of a more powerful and pervasive astrological culture than the very home of the Reformation movement--the Protestant towns of the Holy Roman Empire. While most modern approaches to the religious and social reforms of that age give scant attention to cosmological preoccupations, Robin Barnes argues that astrological concepts and imagery played a key role in preparing the ground for the evangelical movement sparked by Martin Luther in the 1520s, as well as in shaping the distinctive characteristics of German evangelical culture over the following century. Spreading above all through cheap printed almanacs and prognostications, popular astrology functioned in paradoxical ways. It contributed to an enlarged and abstracted sense of the divine that led away from clericalism, sacramentalism, and the cult of the saints; at the same time, it sought to ground people more squarely in practical matters of daily life. The art gained unprecedented sanction from Luther's closest associate, Philipp Melanchthon, whose teachings influenced generations of preachers, physicians, schoolmasters, and literate layfolk. But the apocalyptic astrology that came to prevail among evangelicals involved a perpetuation, even a strengthening, of ties between faith and cosmology, which played out in beliefs about nature and natural signs that would later appear as rank superstitions. Not until the early seventeenth century did Luther's heirs experience a "crisis of piety" that forced preachers and stargazers to part ways. Astrology and Reformation illuminates an early modern outlook that was both practical and prophetic; a world that was neither traditionally enchanted nor rationally disenchanted, but quite different from the medieval world of perception it had displaced.
