Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since their inception, space activities have been innovative, but not driven by commercial considerations – that is, until the end of the Cold War, when the commercialization of space escalated. As a result, the direction of the innovation changed in order to leverage new business opportunities, which reached a turning point in the 2010s. This book discusses the developmental trends of the world space sector in detail, by analyzing their long-term evolution, and studying why this innovative industry sometimes experiences technological and organizational delays. Innovation Trends in the Space Industry also provides a framework to diagnose more accurately the potential technological threats that are currently faced by existing space tech manufacturers. Moreover, this book, with an economic perspective, provides a close examination of the space sector. It also contributes to enriching innovation management theory by leading us to better understand industry emergence shaped by customers, to reinterpret technological and organizational inertia in high technology activities, and to refine disruptive innovation trends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk aversion in the satellite industry has fostered long development cycles and low rates of innovation in the past. Emerging trends in propulsion technology development and spacecraft architecture design could lead to increased adoption of small satellites as well as more open, flexible and useful space systems. Two particular developments can be used to map the future of the industry. First, the development of MEMS thrusters for launch vehicles could enable dedicated launches for small satellites. This could substantially bring down the cost of satellite deployment. Second, the successful completion of the DARPA System F6 project could demonstrate the value of spacecraft fragmentation. This in turn could shift the focus of the industry from certain attributes that result in long development cycles, thereby opening the doors for open systems and greater innovation. Emerging trends in the satellite industry may result in paradigm shifts that would dramatically decrease satellite costs and increase innovation. This may ultimately result in a structural change in the satellite industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Space industry, characterized by the emergence of private companies and start-ups developing innovative space technologies and services, is rapidly transforming the global space landscape. Sweden, with its strong technological capabilities and entrepreneurial spirit, is well-positioned to play a leading role in this new era of space exploration. However, the New Space industry is also highly competitive, and Swedish companies need to be able to innovate quickly and efficiently to succeed. Innovation ecosystems, which are networks of interconnected actors that collaborate to develop and commercialize new technologies, can play a vital role in supporting Swedish New Space companies. This chapter examines the importance of innovation ecosystems in the New Space industry from a Swedish perspective. It begins by providing an overview of the New Space industry and its key trends. It then discusses the role of innovation ecosystems in supporting innovation and growth in the New Space industry. Finally, it examines the Swedish space innovation ecosystem and identifies specific opportunities and challenges for Swedish New Space companies. The Importance of Innovation Ecosystems in the New Space Industry Innovation ecosystems are important for the New Space industry for a number of reasons. First, they provide access to a wide range of resources, including capital, expertise, and infrastructure. This is important for New Space companies, which often have limited resources of their own. Second, innovation ecosystems facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing. This is essential for the development of new technologies, which often require expertise from multiple disciplines. Third, innovation ecosystems can help to reduce the risk associated with innovation. This is important for New Space companies, which are operating in a rapidly changing and competitive environment. The Swedish Space Innovation Ecosystem The Swedish space innovation ecosystem is relatively strong, with a number of well-established companies and research institutions. However, there are also some challenges that need to be addressed to support the growth of Swedish New Space companies. One challenge is that the Swedish space innovation ecosystem is fragmented. There are a number of different actors involved in the space industry, but they are not always well-connected. This can make it difficult for New Space companies to access the resources and support they need. Another challenge is that the Swedish space innovation ecosystem is relatively small. This limits the pool of potential collaborators and investors

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a radically different approach to innovation aimed at creating new growth cycles for the Russian economy. To better grasp the opportunities hidden behind worldwide megatrends, such as the growing economic prosperity of Asian countries and the importance of the internet-based economy, the authors argue for a reinvention of Russia’s innovation strategy. Instead of a purely technology-driven approach, the authors illustrate how the principles of strategic innovation help develop institutional and non-technical innovation, as well as new forms of leadership and entrepreneurship within the Russian business culture. The authors also discuss the impact of strategic innovation on corporate strategies, innovation and economic policy, as well as academic research and development agendas. The book also sheds new light on how cooperation between Russia and the EU, the US and China in the area of innovation can be of mutual benefit.
