Book excerpt: Examine the latest research merging nature and nurture in pathological development Developmental Psychopathology is a four-volume compendium of the most complete and current research on every aspect of the field. Volume Four: Genes and Environment focuses on the interplay between nature and nurture throughout the life stages, and the ways in which a child's environment can influence his or her physical and mental health as an adult. The discussion explores relationships with family, friends, and the community; environmental factors like poverty, violence, and social support; the development of coping mechanisms, and more, including the impact of these factors on physical brain development. This new third edition has been fully updated to incorporate the latest advances, and to better reflect the increasingly multilevel and interdisciplinary nature of the field and the growing importance of translational research. The relevance of classification in a developmental context is also addressed, including DSM-5 criteria and definitions. Advances in developmental psychopathology are occurring increasingly quickly as expanding theoretical and empirical work brings about dramatic gains in the multiple domains of child and adult development. This book brings you up to date on the latest developments surrounding genetics and environmental influence, including their intersection in experience-dependent brain development. Understand the impact of childhood adversity on adulthood health Gauge the effects of violence, poverty, interparental conflict, and more Learn how peer, family, and community relationships drive development Examine developments in prevention science and future research priorities Developmental psychopathology is necessarily interdisciplinary, as development arises from a dynamic interplay between psychological, genetic, social, cognitive, emotional, and cultural factors. Developmental Psychopathology Volume Four: Genes and Environment brings this diverse research together to give you a cohesive picture of the state of knowledge in the field.

Book excerpt: This volume presents innovative and contemporary methodologies and intervention protocols for the enhancement of positive psychological attributes in multicultural professional and organizational contexts. Most methods, models and approaches that underpin positive psychological interventions are confined to clinical samples, closed systems or monocultural contexts, which restrict their applicability to particular contexts. Extensive practical intervention protocols, designs and methods which usually accompany first draft intervention papers are condensed into brief paragraphs in final manuscripts or removed in their entirety. This, in turn, reduces their potential for replicability or adoption by consumers, practitioners, or industry. This volume develops guidelines for enhancing positive psychological attributes, such as positive moods (e.g. positive affect; life satisfaction), strengths (e.g. gratitude; humour), cognitions (e.g. hope; optimism) and behaviours (e.g. emotional regulation; positive relationship building) within various multicultural contexts. Thereby, it shows how positive psychology interventions can be replicated to a wide-range of contexts beyond those in which they were developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first report Early Intervention: the next steps (January 2011, ISBN 9780108509711) underlined that many of the costly and damaging social problems for individuals can be eliminated or reduced by giving children and parents the right type of evidence based programmes 0-18 and especially in their earliest years. This second report sets out how to pay for those programmes within existing resources and by attracting new non government money. The key recommendations are that: (1) Government sets a policy objective that all babies, children and young people should have the social and emotional bedrock essential for their future development and their ability to make effective life choices; (2) Government leadership and co-ordination must improve - an Early Intervention Task and Finish Group of experts from across Government departments should establish, measure and progress-chase Early Intervention outcomes; (3) the expected "Families and the Foundation Stage" statement must include regular and purposeful assessments for the 0-5s to help spot and correct dysfunction early; (4) an independent Early Intervention Foundation is set up to promote Early Intervention, spread best evidence based policies and complement the work being done inside Government; (5) need to be more creative in bringing additional non-government money to investment in Early Intervention; (6) establish an 'Early Intervention Fund' or Funds to raise around £200 million of private investment; and (7) HM Treasury should commission a thorough review of Early Intervention growth incentives ahead of the 2012 Budget.

Book excerpt: Despite the marked increase in anxiety, depression, and suicidal behaviour among school-aged youth, millions of children with mental health needs never receive treatment. Too many are overlooked by "refer-test-place" approaches that only consider evidence of psychopathology without examining students' psychological well-being (or lack of well-being). Consequently, many vulnerable students slip through the cracks without receiving interventions. Fostering the Emotional Well-Being of Our Youth provides an alternative--a dual-factor model of students' mental health that integrates wellness and pathology into a single multi-tier system of mental health support. Philip J. Lazarus, Shannon M. Suldo, and Beth Doll, with foremost scholars in the field, explain what this paradigm shift means for school mental health professionals: why the promotion of well-being is important; how practitioners' day-to-day practices will change; and what the outcomes will be. This volume provides the tools to advocate for and implement supports that foster students' complete mental health.
