Kennedy International Airport, New York, United States, on a scheduled flight for Seoul, Republic of Korea. The flight had 269 persons on board. Soon after departure from Anchorage, Alaska, KE 007 deviated to the right (north) of its direct track, this deviation resulted in penetration of Sovjet Russian air space. Military aircraft operated by the USSR attempted to intercept KE 007 over Kamchatka Peninsula. The interception attempts were unsuccessful. Upon approaching Sakhalin Island, USSR, the flight was intercepted by USSR military aircraft and shot down on the assumption that is was a United States RC-135 (spy) aircraft. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the end of the Korean War, the prevailing myth in the West was that of the absolute supremacy of US Air Force pilots and aircraft over their Soviet-supplied opponents. The claims of the 10:1 victory-loss ratio achieved by the US Air Force fighter pilots flying the North American F-86 Sabre against their communist adversaries, among other such fabrications, went unchallenged until the end of the Cold War, when Soviet records of the conflict were finally opened. Packed with first-hand accounts and covering the full range of US Air Force activities over Korea, MiG Alley brings the war vividly to life and the record is finally set straight on a number of popular fabrications. Thomas McKelvey Cleaver expertly threads together US and Russian sources to reveal the complete story of this bitter struggle in the Eastern skies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penetrate the nature of mind with this contemporary Korean take on a classic of Zen literature. The message of the Tang-dynasty Zen text in this volume seems simple: to gain enlightenment, stop thinking there is something you need to practice. For the Chinese master Huangbo Xiyun (d. 850), the mind is enlightenment itself if we can only let go of our normal way of thinking. The celebrated translation of this work by John Blofeld, The Zen Teaching of Huang Po, introduced countless readers to Zen over the last sixty years. Huangbo’s work is also a favorite of contemporary Zen (Korean: Seon) Master Subul, who has revolutionized the strict monastic practice of koans and adapted it for lay meditators in Korea and around the world to make swift progress in intense but informal retreats. Devoting themselves to enigmatic questions with their whole bodies, retreatants are frustrated in their search for answers and arrive thereby at a breakthrough experience of their own buddha nature. A Bird in Flight Leaves No Trace is a bracing call for the practitioner to let go and thinking and unlock the buddha within.

Book excerpt: This textbook is designed to learn Korean on a plane coming to Korea for travel. It is designed to be able to read Korean as an attribute in a plane that takes more than 6 hours. To read Korean effectively, it is crucial to acquaint yourself with the 67 phonemes, encompassing consonants, vowels, and final consonants. Understand the nuanced pronunciation variations based on their positions and designated roles within a syllable. The learning process is strategically divided into three distinct parts: Part 1: This section delves into consonants, vowels, consonant combinations, and syllable structures. Part 2: Syllables are categorized into first, middle, and final sounds, and learners practice combining these components into cohesive sounds. Part 3: Focuses on discerning pronunciation differences between spoken and written language. The goal is to equip learners with the ability to read signs, advertisements, and brochures at locations like airports or subway stations after disembarking. While the learning time may seem limited, it's worth noting that historically, there were instances of individuals mastering Hangul within six hours. Even during a short flight, therefore, learners can make significant progress. Because in-flight learning is unique to the learning environment, it is suggested to approach learning not by memorization but by becoming accustomed to Hangul as the purpose of studying it is not for an exam but reading. By the time you disembark and go through immigration after a flight longer than six hours, however, you may find yourself able to read the information boards around you. Best of luck in your learning journey!
