Book excerpt: TxDOT research project 0-4421 "A Simplified Approach for Selecting Optimal Traffic Responsive Control Parameters" developed a novel scientific and computationally based procedure and guidelines for operating coordinated systems with traffic responsive plan selection (TRPS) mode. Since its development in the 1970s, TRPS mode remained an underutilized resource due to the complexity of its configuration. Numerous parameters (i.e., detector weights, thresholds, timing plan look-up tables, TRPS timing plans, etc.) had to be set up correctly for the system to work as intended. As a result, traffic engineers have typically preferred to use the time of day mode of operation for its ease of setup. This project will implement the guidelines developed in research project 0-4421 and document a before and after comparison summary for five locations in Texas. Locations are to be chosen to represent a wide range of traffic and/or arterial configurations. This progress report documents the efforts thus far for fiscal year 2005.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall goal of the study was to determine to what extent different vendors' traffic controllers can be effectively used in closed-loop signal systems in a manner acceptable to TxDOT engineers and maintenance personnel. Specific objectives to meet the goal included: Objective 1: Identify current practices and needs of TxDOT engineers and maintenance personnel. Objective 2: Define alternatives for providing closed-loop type traffc signal systems. Objective 3: Evaluate the feasibility and cost of implementing alternative system architectures for closed-loop traffic controller type systems. The findings of the work included a recommendation for TxDOT to proactively be involved in the National Transportation for ITS Protocol (NTCIP) and begin deployment of NTCIP compatible systems as soon as practical. The communications study also included a recommendation that TxDOT should actively be involved in the development of Advanced Transportation Controller standards, including controllers, cabinets, and software.

Book excerpt: This project report summaries research and implementation of signal system communications and improved signal control. An investigation of available signal system communication technologies and media identified spread spectrum radio as an effective, inexpensive, and flexible alternative. As part of the project, a radio communications system was selected and installed at five signalized intersections along US 281 in Falfurrias, Texas. Closed loop system software was then installed to coordinate the previously isolated, actuated intersections. The end result was improved traffic control, improved traffic flow, and remote system monitoring for those responsible for signal maintenance. A second aspect of the project focused on developing real-time control functionality that would make use of the communications system. The Texas Department of Transportation's Dynamic Arterial Responsive Traffic System (DARTS) Specification provided a public domain, real-time signal coordination algorithm that suited this purpose. Simulators were developed by the Texas Transportation Institute to determine the effectiveness of DARTS installed in Falfurrias. Results show an average 18 percent reduction in travel time on US 281 and indicate the potential for DARTS to reduce arterial travel time. As an added project benefit, the simulation software developed for this project can be used to determine DARTS applicability at any given field site, and it can be used to train personnel in DARTS use and calibration.

Book excerpt: Closed-loop traffic control systems can be operated by either Time-of-Day (TOD) mode or Traffic Responsive Plan Selection (TRPS) mode. When properly configured, the TRPS mode has the potential to provide an optimal operation due to its ability to accommodate abnormal traffic conditions such as incidents, special events, and holiday traffic. TRPS mode can also reduce the need for frequent redesign/updates to signal timing plans. To date, there have not been any formal guidelines for selection of robust and optimal TRPS system parameters and thresholds. Consequently, traffic engineers usually revert to the TOD mode of operation for its ease of setup. This report provides a new methodology for robust and optimal selection of TRPS parameters and thresholds. The report presents an innovative framework of TRPS system setup following a comprehensive approach that incorporates a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm and a supervised discriminant analysis. The developed guidelines are presented in simplified tables to facilitate their implementation. Guidelines were verified by using hardware-in-the-loop simulations. Compared to just the worst possible solutions encountered during the optimization, the final solution provided a concurrent savings of 53 percent in delay and 19 percent in stops.
