Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Communications - Mass Media, grade: 4.00, , course: Mass Communication, language: English, abstract: This study examines impact of news media in political advertising in Edo state governorship election. The study was anchored on the uses and gratifications theory. The survey research method was used. The work recommends urgent review of the various media laws to address the peculiar technicalities involved in monitoring and moderating the use of different social media platforms. Findings show that whereas many used the technology to make vital input in the political discourse, others used them to attack opponents, spread false rumours, hate and inciting messages which were believed to have contributed in the violence and tensions witnessed before, during and after the elections in many parts of the country. The following research questions have been drawn to guide the study: What is the impact of news media in political advertising in Edo state governorship election? Do political parties in Nigeria recognise and make use of the new media in their political campaigns? What are the factors that hinder the use of the new media for political campaigns in Edo State? The new media have become veritable tools for political campaigns, because they break boundaries and frontiers, reaching every part of the world. The new media have consequences upon the social, political and economic values of people. New media hold out a possibility of on-demand access to content anytime, anywhere, on any digital device, as well as, interactive user feedback, creative participation and community formation around the media content. What distinguishes new media from traditional media is not the digitising of media content into bits, but the dynamic life of the new media content and its interactive relationship with the media consumer. This dynamic life, moves, breathes and flows with pulsing excitement in real time. It is against this backdrop therefore, that we investigate the impact of news media in political advertising: a study of 2020 governorship election in Edo state.

This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 4.5, , course: African Electoral Democracy, language: English, abstract: This research examines the impact of political apathy on electoral participation in Nigeria and South-Africa in the 2019 general elections in both countries. The objectives are to determine the causes of political apathy in the electoral participation of citizens of Nigeria and South-Africa in their 2019 general elections and to examine the impact of political apathy on the electoral process in both countries. Furthermore the author determines the trend of political apathy (voter turnout) in the general elections in Nigeria and South-Africa from 1999 to 2019, and from 1994 to 2019 respectively. The necessity of this research was borne out of the need to address the increasing rate of political apathy especially voter turnout in both democratic nations. Political participation (voter turnout) was 70% in 2003 in Nigeria when it peaked after four years of democracy. In South Africa, it was 89% in 1999 when participatory electoral democracy was restored. This had declined to 35% in Nigeria in 2019 and 63% in South-Africa in 2019 elections, representing 35% and 26% decline at the peak of electoral participation in both countries respectively. The causes of political apathy in the two countries have been attributed to lack of mobilization of the electorate, political marginalization, corruption, lack of political accountability, lack of motivation, lack of trust in the electoral process, failed promises by political leaders, lack of civic engagements, political violence, thuggery and militarization of the electoral process, political deception, powerlessness of votes etc. Citizens’ loss of interest in the electoral system in both countries has clearly undermined increased participation in the political and electoral processes. The Rational Choice Theory (Downs, 1959) was used. This work observed an obvious decline in political participation in both countries. This was evident in the 2019 national elections in both countries. Lack of trust in the electoral process has undermined electorate’s interest in the political system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the mistreatment of black Americans. In this 'precise and eloquent work' - as described in its Pulitzer Prize citation - Douglas A. Blackmon brings to light one of the most shameful chapters in American history - an 'Age of Neoslavery' that thrived in the aftermath of the Civil War through the dawn of World War II. Using a vast record of original documents and personal narratives, Blackmon unearths the lost stories of slaves and their descendants who journeyed into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation and then back into the shadow of involuntary servitude thereafter. By turns moving, sobering and shocking, this unprecedented account reveals these stories, the companies that profited the most from neoslavery, and the insidious legacy of racism that reverberates today.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, University of Nigeria, course: introduction to personnel management (PAD 635), language: English, abstract: The study examined motivation as a tool for productivity in the Nigerian civil service: A case study of Edo State Civil Service. It also identified the motivational strategies that exist in Edo State Civil Service. In addition, the degree of implementation of these motivational strategies in Edo State Civil Service was examined as well as the effectiveness of the identified motivational strategies on the productivity of the Civil Servants in Edo State. The study used both primary and secondary data. The study revealed that the civil service in Edo State enjoys some motivational incentives from the State Government, although the motivational incentives are rarely implemented in the State Civil Service. They study revealed that increase in remuneration among others like reward for loyalty, availability of opportunity and provision of working tools are motivational mechanisms adopted by the Edo State Civil Service towards increase in employees’ productivity. The finding of the study revealed that job satisfaction level of staffs of Edo State civil Service is affected or determined by a number of factors which include wages and salary, pension and gratuity, promotion work environment and the work condition. The study also revealed that the Edo State Civil Service motivational strategies like prompt payment of salary and granting of housing and car loans are poorly implemented. The study posits that the morale and initiatives of the Edo State Civil Servants is dampened due to the improper implementation of these motivational strategies which may not at all times be disconnected from politics of favouritism and nepotism. The study concluded that employers should be able to help employees see that the organization can help them satisfy their needs and utilize their potentials to contribute to the achievement of the organizational goal. Workers are affected by different needs at different times; this means that individual worker is motivated differently. Also, those human needs could be interdependent and overlapping. The government should endeavour to integrate goals of the organization with those of its employees and continuer to adopt the supportive management technique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Communications - Journalism, Journalism Professions, , language: English, abstract: The relation between media and society is very interesting and complex in its nature. As society is dynamic and heterogeneous, and as well media technology is non sleeping and pluralistic, it needs always research to understand the relationship between the two. Thus, no theory solely can describe the relation between media and society. The available evidences shows the connection between media and society are contextual across time and place and heterogeneous across societies and media type. The following six perspectives summarizes the nexus between media and society. Firstly, Media created the notion of mass society; secondly, as critical school thought based on Marxist view media are capitalist controlled for suppressing the poor. Thirdly , media are functioning or dysfunction institution of society. Fourthly, media is a social conscience which constructs reality. Fifthly, media technology effects change in society. Lastly, media transformed the human history to the new stage called Information society. In a true pluralist environment media has power to serve as a public sphere to control powerful groups, the problem is media could be dominated by other powerful groups and may serve as suppression tool. Media fail to represent all cultures, cultural groups and individuals from the processes and the contents of media production, if it is dominated by the oppressors. This marginalization is continuing in the new media (virtual world) too. Thus, the media and society relations always needs research and critical understanding as their power functions and dysfunctions societies across time and geography, as a societal phenomenon are very dynamic.
