Subsequent chapters cover generalized orthopedic diseases such as neurofibromatosis and osteogenesis imperfecta, infectious processes, neuromuscular diseases, musculoskeletal tumors, trauma, and orthopedic procedures. The chapters review associated epidemiology, clinical presentation and evolution, treatment, and differential diagnoses, with in-depht analysis of imaging characteristics. With more than 1800 images, high-quality MRI, CT, and US examples complement the radiographs of a broad variety of musculoskeletal disorders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trauma to various organ systems is a common medical problem in the pediatric age group. With the increase in vehicular traffic and active participation in contact sports, as well as a change in the social atmosphere, the incidence of injury to children is increasing. There is considerable morbidity associated with these injuries and accidents are the most common cause of death in this population group. The radiologist, using the various diagnostic radiological moda lities available, becomes involved in practically all cases of trauma of any degree of seriousness. The radiological methods lend themselves not only to determining the specific diagnosis but also to assessing the extent of the injury. This is important in determining of the patient as in recent years a more conserva the management tive type of therapy is advocated in several types of injury. As has been said, "Children are not like adults," hence injuries are of different types from those seen in adults. The ligaments and tendons of children are stronger than the bone structure, thus sprains and strains are not as common as fractures. Certain organs are in a less protected position in a child and may readily be injured from relatively minor trauma. Injury due to violent action of others such as gunshot and stab wounds are not as common as in the adult population but they are increasing in the teenage group. Blunt trauma or that due to rapid deceleration is the usual type of trauma seen in childhood.

Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed and comprehensive overview of the role of diagnostic imaging in the assessment and management of trauma and polytrauma in children. The coverage includes imaging of injuries to the head, thorax, abdomen, bone and musculoskeletal system, with careful attention to the newest imaging techniques, imaging during the course of recovery and imaging of complications. A series of illustrative cases underline the prognostic value of imaging. In addition, an individual chapter is devoted to diagnostic imaging in cases of child abuse. The book concludes by discussing informed consent and medicolegal issues related to the imaging of pediatric traumatic emergencies. Imaging Trauma and Polytrauma in Pediatric Patients will be invaluable in enabling radiologists and clinicians to identify the main features and signs of injuries on a wide range of imaging techniques, including X-ray, ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Book excerpt: Emergency care of pediatric orthopedic surgical emergencies is often provided by orthopedic surgeons who primarily treat adults. Pediatric Orthopedic Surgical Emergencies is designed to provide the essential information needed to safely evaluate and treat the most common surgical emergencies in pediatric orthopedic surgery. Each emergency scenario includes the keys to patient evaluation, operative considerations, and expected complications. Each contributor provides technical pearls and tips based on their preferences and clinical experience in this area. Topics covered run the gamut from trauma (including the mangled extremity and compartment syndrome) to individual body regions (the spine, upper and lower extremities) to infection and other conditions. Pediatric Orthopedic Surgical Emergencies is a convenient, illustrated guide to procedures that can be challenging to those physicians who treat pediatric patients infrequently.

Over the last few years, there have been considerable advances in this area, driven by clinical as well as technological developments. The authors are all internationally renowned experts in their field. They are also excellent teachers, and provide didactically outstanding chapters. The book is disease-oriented and covers all relevant imaging modalities, with particular emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging. Important aspects of pediatric imaging are also included. IDKD books are completely re-written every four years. As a result, they offer a comprehensive review of the state of the art in imaging. The book is clearly structured with learning objectives, abstracts, subheadings, tables and take-home points, supported by design elements to help readers easily navigate through the text. As an IDKD book, it is particularly valuable for general radiologists, radiology residents, and interventional radiologists who want to update their diagnostic knowledge, and for clinicians interested in imaging as it relates to their specialty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, now in its second edition, remains one of very few works devoted to pediatric musculoskeletal imaging since the advent of cross-sectional methods, and the only one – to the best of our knowledge – specifically dedicated to the skeletally immature joint and its diseases. There has been a steady decline in the number of pediatric radiologists, and less emphasis has been given to pediatric training for general radiologists, so that the latter are more and more unfamiliar with normal and abnormal imaging findings in children and adolescents. This can lead to the misinterpretation of normal findings and failure to recognize abnormal exam results. Even though this book is intended primarily for radiologists, it will also greatly benefit general rheumatologists, pediatric rheumatologists, pediatricians, orthopedic surgeons and all those involved in the diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents with articular complaints. It employs simple and accessible language, so that it provides the in-depth information required by radiologists, while still being understandable for non-radiologists. Although its structure is fluent and logical, the chapters are all self-contained. Richly illustrated, its imagery combines the pictorial strength of old radiographs, which display late-stage abnormalities rarely seen today, and the appeal of modern imaging and its ability to detect early signs and subtle findings. Key points are summarized at the end of each chapter. By presenting essential information on imaging of the immature joint, the authors hope to provide a useful tool to help radiologists (musculoskeletal specialists and generalists alike) face the daily challenges of interpreting pediatric exams. Soon, artificial intelligence (AI) will be able to perform the most basic radiological diagnoses. Nevertheless, pediatric musculoskeletal radiology is complex and full of facets, and mastering this area in this ever-changing time can be a very important differential in the career of the 21st century radiologist.
