Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of sea stories encompassing about fifteen years of the Polish Merchant Marine from the 1920s until 1939. It covers adventures on sailing ships and transatlantic liners, until the tragic sinking of the MS Pilsudski (sometimes called the Polish Titanic), by German torpedoes off the English coast. The collection was published in Poland in 1960 and became a bestseller. It is a beautiful tale written with humor and with insight into the cultures of the exotic lands visited, now translated for the first time into English by Danuta Borchardt. She is the author's daughter, a retired psychiatrist, a writer of fiction in English, and an award-winning translator into English of Witold Gombrowicz's novels and of Cyprian Norwid's poems. She had assistance in the translation of Polish nautical terms into English by Jerzy Tarasiewicz, the author's former student.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was it the captain's fault, as many said? Or did the company, the Coast Guard and the American Bureau of Shipping all have a hand on the helm of the SS El Faro as she steered too close to Hurricane Joaquin? This is an examination of a tragedy that has been well-researched and investigated -- heroically so at times -- by the United States Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board. Three very well-done books have been published. All of these efforts produced detailed recommendations and observations and all are publicly available. I commend them to you. My effort touches on the broad sweep and events of the tragedy and investigation, but if you want the detailed story of the final voyage of the ship, you're better off with the other books. My main goal here is to show how the SS El Faro fit into a larger system and culture -- one that I have been covering off and on as a journalist and author for 38 years. It's this system, I feel, that will result in another SS El Faro someday unless it is reformed. Another note on style. My preference in non-fiction is "narrative." In other words, whenever I can, I tell a story and show what is happening; I prefer that to "telling" the reader, because I think "showing" is more readily absorbed. Humans learn through stories. Story telling rather than a lecture better illustrates the emotions at play here, as well as the moods, culture and vibe of the ship and the industry. This does not mean I take a pure poetic license. The dialogue quoted here is real, not made up. The material is factual.

Book excerpt: A gripping novel of love and adventure on the high seas that introduces an unforgettable young heroine. Growing up on the Bay of Fundy in the 1860s, Azuba Galloway is determined to escape the confines of her town and live at sea. When she captures the heart of Captain Nathaniel Bradstock, she is sure her dreams are about to be realized, only to have pregnancy intervene. But when Azuba becomes embroiled in a scandal, Nathaniel must bring his young family abroad to save his reputation. Azuba gets her wish, but at what price? Alone in a male world, and juggling the splendor of foreign ports with the terror of the open seas, Azuba must fight to keep her family together. Blending the high-tension drama of missed chances and unexpected twists of the sort that made A Reliable Wife a bestseller with the pluck and spirit of a heroine in the vein of Laura Ingalls Wilder, The Sea Captain's Wife will captivate readers and critics alike.

By the end of the week the seagull had retuned and was eating crackers out of the captain's hand. They continued their friendship the entire season and the next year in the spring the gull retuned. After four years of friendship, the wild seagull named Polly still visits. This unlikely story of a wild bird and a friendly sea captain reminds us how we are all connected"--
